I'm 17 and in my 5th year of secondary school and I'm yet to relise what I want to do with my life :(
These kind of threads probably come up a lot on this forum so I'm sorry cmods

I want to do something in I.T with my life as I'm very tech savvy when it comes to computers and have a passion when it comes to doing computers stuffs* independently like novice web designing and video editing etc.. Never been any aspect I havn't liked. I know saying that I want to do something in I.T is very broad and that's really my problem.

I'd love to get an insight of someone that has done any I.T related courses after they left Secondary School and where that has put them today; Job title and what kind of work they do, what course they had taken and where and if they enjoy/ed it. So every comment along my request would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks for reading :o

    EDIT: Title should say something
    /facepalm

Thats more like graphics/mulimedia than IT.

Try some evening courses/certs and see what you like. You won't know till you try. Also see if theres any money in the area, and job prospects.

I'd be heading for 300- 370 atm with how I'm working but if I definitely knew what I was going for, I'd work for it.
As for aspects I'm naive to know what's avaiable there and what kind of job I could obtain from x course

That's what has me worrying. Like if I took networking technologies as a course, I wouldn't have a notion of what kind of job I could get from that Or if thered be any work in it in say 5 years

You mention web designing and video editing. Are If you are more interested in the creative side then a multimedia course or a straight up media course might suit you better. If you'd prefer the technical side, Computer science or networking would be better suited. Most IT courses will have some bit of programming in it. Have you done any? Not html but things like java, c#, python etc.
I'm not that familar with networking degrees but I'd assume they'd be dealing with the admin side of IT while computer science would be more software development (someone correct me if they know better :) )

I would suggest looking cloud computing if you want an IT related job. This will include networking, databses coding, everything really involved in IT. Its where the jobs will be within the next 5 years and onwards. There should be courses out soon enough. But if your interested in web design go for a multimedia course or maybe a software develoment course that has a large focus on web design. it really depends on ther college sometimes.

I'd agree that cloud computing looks to be taking off at the moment. Most realms of virtualization is pretty big too. Are you sure it's IT you want to do though? If it's video editing that doesn't really mean IT.

You would probably like Flash if you're creative...which would fall under web design mostly

I've done some beginner java but python is alien to me :p

Just gave it a quick google and looks really interesting . Will have to give it more thought though as I'm not sure of the whole concept :o
Would that kind of course fall under a course like Network Technologies?

    100% I.T :)
Disregard the video editing as I wouldn't have the interest for it as I do web design or more importantly networking.

I'd put web design as my last option so I think I'll stay away from the multimedia side and keep it more technical.

I am doing an IT support and IT management course and I have had networking modules every semester. Its all ccna cisco stuff. Computing courses would also have this and also software development and networking courses. I dont know about computer science or anything else really. Its best you ask a college you want to go to or one that you have to go to because of location etc.

Im in CIT and here is some of the courses http://courses.cit.ie/index.cfm. Click on "computing". You can look at some of the different modules within each course. http://courses.cit.ie/index.cfm/page/course/courseId/246 something like this seems like what you are looking for. Server side web development etc aswell as networking.

Get a Computer Science Degree under your belt and spend that time thinking of what you'd like to specialise in. It's a huge sector and there are a myriad of opportunities - you have a long time to decide what it is you really want to do. Getting any degree opens a lot of doors and will stand to you if you change your mind later on.

Oh, and work your arse off in Maths for your Leaving Cert.
