It varies based on the Faculty. For the KBS, the new grading bands are:
    A1 80%+
    A2 75-79
    B1 70-74
    B2 65-69
    B3 60-64
    C1 55-59
    C2 50-54
    C3 45-49
    D1 40-44
    D2 35-39
    F less than 35%

So 35% is a pass in kbs?

a d is a compensating fail so your qca (your average grade out of 4.0) must be above 2.0

if its below 2.0 its counted as a fail

Since you need a QCA average above 2.0 then effectively anything under 45% is a fail. 35%-45% is a compensating fail

I think you'll find the grade bands to be similar for most of the faculties

In the Maths Department, an A1 is 90%+

It depends. I've a module, pass rate is 25%, another module to get an A is 90%. Think so many have to be put into each category, ie the curve. I'm in the ece department

I was told a compensating fail is where ya can take marks from another subject (im hoping for an A1 in statics) and use the 'extra' marks to bring the failing subject up to pass standard (eng maths)...is this true?

Really don't wanna have to tell my aul lad I need money to repeat Maths:pac:

If you have a QCA of 2.00 with no other compensating fails then you dont need to repeat the exam. Otherwise, you need to repeat it. You can clear the grade and repeat if you wish..

how exactly is the QCA calculated:confused:

No you cannot take marks from another subject to bring up a fail to a pass mark.
However, what I'd say was really meant by whoever told you that, is that as long as your QCA is above 2.0, then you dont have to repeat a compensating fail, as the 'A-grade' will have helped keep your QCA above the required 2.0 to pass the year.

Saying that though, if you fail with an 'E', 'F' or 'NG' grade, then you will have to repeat it regardless of your QCA if you wish to progress to the next year.
