Letterkenny to Ballybofey was deadly this afternoon: it looked as if the road had not been gritted, at best there were two strips of tarmac on which to drive.
South of the Twin Towns, even the gap, was reasonable, a big contrast to the N13.

Walked home from my mates there...it was so cold i got a headache and felt like my lip was going numb...wrap up very well it's atrociously cold out there.

Went to Letterkenny today and the roads were passable with care but still slippy...turned down an opportunity to go to the casino tonight that's how much I didn't really fancy it :p

Noticed that about my lips as well actually

-15.9C at the moment in Kilygordan, coldest place in the country again tonight

You'll be fine if you take it easy but I would suggest leaving an hour earlier if its possible. Get most of the journey done in daylight hours.

Cheers Muffler. We're pushing to get away as soon as possible. Hopefully by the time I get to Donegal things will be a bit better. Listening to highland now and Ballybofey to Lk and to Lifford is supposed to be quite bad as the temp is -13 and too low for the salt to work.

Vincent Lynn, engineer with DCC, now on radio saying that the Stranorlar - Letterkenny/Lifford roads are treacherous as the road temperature has dropped to -13 the salt is completely ineffective.

Good news is that he hopes the temperature will rise by a couple of degrees later in the morning but he has advised people not to travel on those roads unless its absolutely essential.

They were just as bad yesterday but south of Ballybofey the road was in good condition, even the Gap was OK.
It was like another county on the N15 but the temperature was not any different!
I was told that "The Gap" was the big divide in Donegal but it looks like the Twin Towns are the new border. ;)

:) Hes some craic. Tell us something we dont know.
Does he not realise that people have been been driving on these non salted roads for well over a week or more now and are well aware of just how dangerous they are.

    from highland radio

    http://www.highlandradio.com/
Distribution of a new load of salt for treating roads is set to begin tomorrow.

A 4 thousand tonne shipment is arriving into Cork this evening, with a fleet of vehicles on standby to distribute it nationwide. Some supplies have already arrived in Dublin and Belfast, with extra salting taking place from tomorrow, with the N56 being redesignated from a green to a red route. This means the route will now be salted.

Vincent Lynn of Donegal County Council says it’s a welcome positive development………..

I am heading home tomorrow for Christmas and concerned about the roads. I wonder how is Barnes Mor Gap today?

The gap is ok with a bit of care. It one (probably the only place) of the places that the council have consistently looked after.

In saying that you will be driving at 30 - 40 mph max.

To people like me coming home for Christmas, this information is valuable.

I went through the Gap at midday and its pretty good, just keep it steady. From Ballybofey/Stranorlar on to LK is very very bad. Very dangerous.

Not looking forward to this journey tomorrow . My boyfriend isn't finished work until 9 o'clock and I have to make my own way over to Blanchardstown to meet him and then we'll travel home together. We'll be going by the M1 and then via Monaghan to the Milford area. Does anyone have an update on the roads on that route? I'll probably make it home just in time for dessert on Christmad Day =(

What is the story with LK main street? Was talking to Courier who's delivering a parcel to me, he says that it has taken him 2.5hrs to get from top of mainstreet down to northwest computers... (they were closed when he got there of course) Is the traffic/road conditions that bad?

Friend is supposed to be going to inlaws in LK tomorrow, driving a Safira? Opel? bad on the snow an ice.. should he chance it?

Not sure what that specific stretch is like but Highland reported some roads as terrible in Inishowen.
