There are heavy snow showers in east leinster forecasted for today and tonight. Temperature won't go above 0. Source met.ie. Right now there are horrible dark clouds coming in over Dublin bay. I think by mid-morning the decision to continue the exams will be shown up to be a short-sighted reactive approach to overnight weather, and not a pro-active approach taking into account the forecast for today

If only UCD decision makers were as smart and as knowledgeable as us ... no sarcasm.

I know it's rough guys but we have to keep going though this weather . There's plenty of primary and secondary schools open today (including my own). Good luck

It can all depend what part of Dublin you are in. And UCD unlike local primary school catchment area is rather large. I made it in however I think the 9am was possibly a blessing. Very few cars out but the roads were ****ing awful. There's forecasts for 8 plus cms starting soon. Irresponsible IMO on UCDs behalf. Regardless UCD's updates on this matter were a disgrace.

According to 'will it rain today?' website, large precipitation expected in south dublin in the next half hour.

Eh so I'm stuck in Galway , just missed my bus because my car got a puncture. There's no way I can make this exam. Would these count as extenuating circumstances?

yeh better have your story straight, the gardaí are no fools and will not be handing out letters willy nilly. They are trained to investigate!

I'd say they'll do it without any hassle at all tbh.

Have one at 6pm, and buses stopped at 8 last night, so how is everyone supposed to get home?

Is anyone actually going to go in?

Exam at 6 tonight. Going to walk into the library now for a bit of last minute preparation. I'd love to be able to see the carnage at the exams this morning.

UCD are a pack of morons. DCU and all those colleges postponed their exams last year and the snow wasn't as bad as this. Jokeshop!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 376 ✭✭samsamson

UCD's lack of communication has been an absolute disgrace. Over 12 hours between updates when people have 9am exams to try and get to in this weather.

They are putting the health and safety of their students at risk, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

But hey, at least I can pop in and see Scott Ahearn for a cup of tea if the mood strikes me.

But sure nobody's going to get injured on their property, so it's grand!

I think it's pretty obvious UCD had put zero thought into the chance of severe weather so they never had any consideration for a cancellation.

The exams are scheduled about a year in advance. They were severely constrained by the leaving cert delay so there wasn't much of a need to consider for severe weather. Our climate indicates we have mild winters, you cant predict for weather 12 months in advance.

    From James Williamson on FB:
Guys, Just letting you know that I am working to get the exams cancelled for today. Please keep checking the website and here for updates. I should have some news in the next 40 minutes either way.

It's been known for about 3 weeks this could happen, it's obvious plans could have been made from then but I really doubt they did. I also doubt they looked at the weather forecast either. It's expected to snow for the whole day, and I think have a situation of 1,000+ people trying to get home from RDS this evening onwards is very irresponsible from UCD.

That now is getting worse by the minute out there, not looking forward to trekking to the exam if they're on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,139 ✭✭✭martineatworld

I've met James thorugha friend of a friend type thing, he's a nice lad and I do get a sense that he's a bit more proactive than the rest of the SU.

But I fear he'll fight a losing battle, I mean getting UCD to use common sense? Pffff, this is a joke, looks like another hour and a half walk home tonight.

Guy's what exactly are the repercussions if we don't make it in for the exam? I have to travel half way across the country for mine tomorrow and I'm seriously considering it's just not worth the effort.

An email from James yesterday, get a garda report and you'll get extenuating circumstances. It should be ok, given the distance you'll have to travel.
    Hi Everyone,

I know this is the middle of exams, but with a bit of luck you will check this email in time.

The James Joyce Library will close tonight at 10pm. Other libraries will close a little earlier. If the weather continues, the same will take place tomorrow.

In terms of exams, they will still go ahead. Keep an eye on www.ucd.ie. UCD are keeping an eye on Dublin Bus/DART updates and will start doing this tomorrow at 6am and will base any decisions on that and the weather updates. Updates on exams will be posted online. All of the main roads and areas around the hall will be cleared and the SU shuttle bus will operate as usual. If you really can't make an exam you must fill out an extenuating circumstances form and attach a garda report outlining the fact that roads are impassable at your address. Aside from that exams are going ahead.

Hope the exams are going well.

    James

There is no such thing as a "garda report" on the weather. It is very much down to the Garda on the front-desk as to whether he or she will oblige or not. Have a look at this thread.

What are the roads like around the RDS?

Yeah, I say it's just get a written statement stamped and verified. Can't imagine them not doing it tbh.

Currently on my way in to campus, but I'm reading now the shuttle bus has stopped, A mate is doing me a huge favour by driving me in, its been 2 hours so far, seriously dissapointed they didnt make the obvious decision at 6am as I'll now be stranded in UCD

Anyone using the DART be weary - all services to and from Connolly have halted due to points failures.

Well this day just gets better and better...

If those DART delays aren't sorted I've no idea how I'll get in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,590 ✭✭✭Pigwidgeon

According to Facebook the SU are having a conference call at 11.30 to try get them cancelled. The 12 exams are still going ahead and we should hear by 12 about the rest.
