Cousin's computer keeps getting attacked by outside IPs etc. and I can't figure this out. It doesnt seem to be anything on the computer, I've done a full (and painfully thorough) Defrag, Virus sweep and Spyware scan using SASw, Norton IS 2011, and Malwarebytes. He was running Norton IS 2008 when I got here though so anything could have happened. Still not finding anything new on the scans and only tracking cookies ever showed up.

Modem has been reset already, and I've confirmed via the router that the IP is not Static.

the DDS tool in your sticky doesnt appear to want to run. Keeps crashing despite attempts and at one point said it didnt support the OS (Windows Vista Home Prem 64-bit) So I've run the previously suggested Hijack This instead:

    Any help would be apprecificated!

Here is the Norton Security log, I've narrowed it down to the Intrusion Prevention activity:

A common way to get rid of some of the more stubborn viruses is to use the rkill program first to terminate any infected processes and then run Malwarebytes again. Try that. Also try Malwarebytes in 'Safe Mode with Networking' if you haven't already.

Hello Overheal, after reading up on it a bit, it looks like you might have to use Kaspresky's TDSSkiller program which you can read about here. That and/or run a fixmbr command to replace the MBR on the drive. Either method should work.

Thanks, it looks like it was a rootkit that attached itself to the MBR. TDSS was a champ <3.

However, just had a BSOD while I was shutting down to reboot. Can't pull up the event in Safe Mode but Im pretty sure it was 0x000007E or something to that effect; Hard Drive related. Booting into Safe Mode OK. MWB didn't pick up anything new.

It's Vista so there is no recovery console and hence no fixmbr command. So I might be in a bit of trouble here. What other ways are there to rebuild the MBR?

Well, the Vista Recovery CD wont load properly, it gets to the green background/wallpaper and then just stops. It wont accept anything I do from a USB Key, and I still have no idea how to fix the MBR, let alone any idea how I can now reinstall the OS/perform a repair install. Equal parts frustrated and exhausted.

Maybe there's a problem with your recovery disk. You can download copies here. If the recovery disk does load, the there are fixmbr instructions here. All yourlooking to do with the recovery disk is get to a command prompt.

So you can boot into Safe Mode okay now? Can you boot normally yet? If so then also have a look at EasyBCD as you can replace the MBR with that too,

No its been booting into Safe Mode, but not regularly - that keeps geting 0x000007E but if i can get easyBCD to load anyhow in Safe Mode ill try it out.

Didn't know about those recovery discs at all. Bookmarked, tyvm :)

That all sounds just a little bit too odd. I'd say at this stage, given the time you've spent on it already, just backup the data and reinstall.

yeah thats what Im doing. Turns out it wasnt not loading the discs it was just taking 10 minutes to do so. Anywho, the recovery console didn't seem to fix the problem, so yeah Im in the middle of the backup. I'm mad at him for only using 1 partition: I'd be ready to reformat but all of his programs are on C: and he has a **** internet connection and 120gb of stuff I'm wagering he'd preferably not have to download again over the course of 3 months.

However, I did find a Logitech G11 in his closet which Im allowed to have, he upgraded to a G19 some time ago. Beats the $5 Flea Market board I bought last year :)
