Useful lens guide for non built in AF motor users

Sorry, meant to add 'Nikon' users, but I'm sure most people will know before looking in.


Swiped from elsewhere, but thought it might be very useful for users of Nikon non-built in motor dslrs, as I know there are many of you on here and the question arises a lot

So far the cameras that apply to this thread:
D40(x), D60, D3000, D5000, D3100

I would like to start off with the Nikon lenses that will autofocus on these bodies:
All Nikon lenses with the designation DX (except for the 10.5mm fisheye)
All Nikon lenses with the designation AF-s

When it comes to third party lenses, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina, it becomes more difficult to find out which lens will, and which lens won't autofocus. Sigma does have the HSM (Hypersonic motor) which is similar to Nikon's SWM (Silent wave motor - designated by AF-s in the lens name). But apart from the HSM featured lenses, you will have to look at the product descriptions and look if it says anywhere that it has a built-in motor in the Nikon version of the lens.
Tamron has more lenses like that (only built-in motor no designation), but you can see if the lens has a built-in motor if the productnumber has the addition of -II, for instance: Model A17NII for the AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2.

Tokina
Tokina has only one lens at the moment that will autofocus on these bodies, the super wide-angle AF 12-24mm f/4.0 PRO DX-II, make sure it has the -II added to the name when buying, or look for the red stripe on the badge.

Tamron
These are the available Tamrons, according to Tamron Europe.

Di II lenses first (optimized for DX format) that have a built-in motor from release:
SP AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5
SP AF 17-50mm f2.8 VC
AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 VC
SP AF 60mm f/2.0 macro 1:1

Look out with these:
SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8, look for product number A16NII
AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3, look for product number A14NII
AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3, look for product number A18NII

The AF 55-200mm f/4-5.6 has never gotten a built-in motor!

Now onto the Di lenses (Full frame/ FX compatible) that have a built-in motor from release:
AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 VC
SP AF 70-200mm f/2.8

Look out with these:
SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8, look for product number A09NII
AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6, look for product number A17NII
SP AF 90mm f/2.8 macro 1:1, look for product number A272NII

The AF 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6, AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3, SP AF 200-500mm f/5-6.3 and SP AF 180mm f/3.5 macro 1:1 have never gotten a built-in motor!

Sigma
And now concluding with the Sigmas. Same as with the Tamrons, I will use the European (Benelux) site for my information.

Lenses with HSM that are DC (optimized for DX):
EX AF 4.5mm f/2.8 HSM circular fisheye
EX AF 10mm f/2.8 HSM diagonal fisheye
EX AF 10-20mm f/4-5.6 HSM
EX AF 10-20mm f/3.5 HSM
AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4 OS HSM
AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 HSM

The AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6, AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO, AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 OS have a built-in motor.

The following lenses have no motor, they are all DG!
EX AF 8mm f/3.5 circular fisheye, EX AF 15mm f/2.8 diagonal fisheye, EX AF 20mm f/1.8, EX AF 24mm f/1.8, EX AF 24-60mm f/2.8, EX AF 24-70mm f/2.8, EX AF 28mm f/1.8, EX AF 28-70mm f/2.8, AF 28-70mm f/2.8-4, AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3, EX AF 50mm f/2.8 macro 1:1, EX AF 70mm f/2.8 macro 1:1, EX AF 105mm f/2.8 macro 1:1

I hope that at least the basics are clear, and that you feel inspired to invest the matter yourself more, now you have some basics

Thanks for posting that, I'll definitely save that. I'm pretty sure you can use the full frame versions, just once you remember to multiply the size by 1.5 as the a full frame sensor's one and a half times the size of the dx sensors

It's handy, especially when scouting about for used lenses where a lot of the time sellers don't supply much info, or often don't even know.

You're probably right on the FX lenses, I'm sure some of them at least auto-focus on these cameras.

I don't have to worry much as I use a D200 which has the motor built in, but it's a nice list of available lenses anyhow.
