Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

right to all you experts. im getting a tt bike and im no expert at all so what way should i move towards???

budget is 2k but could stretch to 2.5k!!!

    1. 2009 2nd hand trek ttx 9.0 with 1000 miles on it!! now the shop said they would put on brandnew zipp's combo 606 and easton tri bars on it..already had full dura ace set up. think the bike was lying up for a few months!! then this price would come in around 3k!! like could mabye sell the dog to make up the extra money if its really worth it!!!

    2. 2010 new aragon 18 e114 with ultegra set up and easton bars! this would only come with a set of traning wheels which is a bit of a downer as i want a set of carbon wheels! and this would come in at 3k.

4.i can get felt da frame for 1900 new! and the dude in the shop said could be cycling it outta the shop i presume with basic components and set of traning wheels for 2,800. is there a point of having a serious frame but with average components!!

    5. then finally new planet x exocet, with sram red components and fsa chainset? this will come with carbon 50's on it? price is on the noe 2500 euro. right on the budget!!!

like am i as well to go with the planet x cos firstly its in the budget range and i presume these are all roung good components or should i go for any of the others and pay it off as tri season is 6 months away and not as if i can go out traning in this snow!!

Any advice would be appreciated!!! cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was in similar boat few weeks ago Sherdo ... all i can say is don't rush into buying anything. You have loads of time before the tri season really gets going. I picked up a vgc second hand Cervelo P2 without wheels. Nice to have a choice of wheels to put on it now. Would highly recommend going second hand on a TT bike. Most of he time they are very well looked after and don't see a whole lot of use/abuse.
On your choices above - I don't like the look of those Treks, really like the argon but a lot of money to pay for it to come with bog standard wheels. Planet X represents great value alright but mixed enough opinion on them here - saying that, opinion is more positive than negative! Check out this site to see the kind of value that can be got going second hand

I would deffo go for the Trek, race proven and great design. And the wheels are worth a lot as well. TT bikes are usually well looked after, barely used and don't get abused, so a 2nd hander is good value.

was kinda hoping nearly for people to big up the planet x but im the same will it get too a stage where every1 has them!! like im no TT specialist but i want to be able to smash my times in tri's from last year etc!!

so i think its a question of a trek ttx or planet x exocet!!!

with the trek the dude in the shop now said if i did put on the zipp's and bars!! i would be goin away with an 8k bike???

like im reading review's of the exocet!!seem pretty good so the carbon 50's aint bad wheels right??? like its sram red i think apart from chainset mabye so if i go and get all sram red and it has the planet x tri bars? what are these like?

    cheers for comments lads!

    please keep them comin!!!

What are you hoping to do with the bike? Like what are your targets or races for next year?

I would stick to your budget, it's very easy to keep saying "If I spend 100 euro more I can get this...".

ive never heard anything about these bikes!! serious wheels and components are good? u can only get these off the net? bit weary about getting bikes off the net as you cant get fitted etc! have you got one of these?? is this a 2010 or 2011?

any opinion on the other bikes?

I am half thinking of selling my PX Stealth, it is a size small, black,Rear Renn 575 Disc, 80mm front, Dura Ace all round, FSA TT Crank, Brand new 3T Brezza bars just fitted and quite a few other goodies. Showroom condition. Theres a mixed opinion on them here, mostly uninformed. I also have a Cervelo TT bike, the PX won quite a few races last year and took a course record or two in some Triathlons.

I also know of a guy selling a medium sized Felt DA (54cm). Dura Ace all round and Hed 3 wheels for 2400. In fact he just emailed me a pic to put it up on my club website. Looks pretty cool, all black. I know the guy well so this will be ship shape, definitely good enough for top races too, he would be a well known triathlete and the bike would have been in Ironman Switzerland this year.

good point dirkvodoo!!! just am gonna use the bike for triathlon's! i only did 4 sprints last year and got the bug!signed uo for half ironman in galway and will do a full one the following year! so i want a decent bike to get me through that!! like i went from doin 45mins for 20k on my own to doin 33mins in my last sprint try and targeting more olympic races next year and hoping to get 40k down to about 65mins etc !!!

Good stuff! I wouldn't have any opinions on those bikes as I know nothing about TT bikes really, but I wouldn't worry so much about spec as I would about the fit.

That Felt Quigs mentions sounds pretty sweet though!

Well I am keeping the Cervelo (its a P3C) because I collect Cervelo bikes. Only reason. The PX, I am only toying with the idea of selling, I need to clear space for one bike and it's hard to justify 2 TT bikes although I might get rid of an old Trek Madone instead. I think the Exocet looks more aero than the stealth but don't believe that it actually is from what I have read. I don't think it is especially good value either.

The Felt DA is a 2007 I believe which was the best looking of them I reckon. Light use on this bike, race miles only and looked after like a baby.

Heres a link to a pic of the bike as it would be sold, I can send you on the guys contact details if you want:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/picture.php?albumid=1477&pictureid=7974

..... and listen to Dirks advice, fit is far more important. I did some tests on the turbo (imagic with power output) and it shows I am quicker on the PX than the P3C because I just don't have the position dialled in as well on the P3C. I simply cannot push out the same power in an aero position on the P3C and it is all down to fit (stem and bar changes ahoy!)

Edit, just noted that the DA has the best TT saddle you can get for a long event in my opinion, the Arione Tri saddle. I had a regular Arione on the PX and swapped it for one of these. Best 120 euro I spent this year.

must deffo get the saddle so for long distance races! not too sure about ur mate DA, its just when u see the 2010 model, u expect that!! i i had the money wheelworx are selling the 2010 DA with zipp 808's and full dura ace for €4500 which is pretty good.there getting rid of all stock for new year i presume. like the guy selling the PX is doin the road for me and will give me a bike fit etc cos at the moment im cycling a bike on my opinion and that counts for nothin!! so id say im doin nothin right etc!!!

I prefer the 07 DA myself, the red on the 2010 doesn't agree with me, but thats just me, I tend to favour the plain look on all my bikes e.g. my PX stealth here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/picture.php?albumid=1477&pictureid=7979

The fit is crucial for you though, if you are doing 33 for a 20k in a sprint tri, I would expect that the bulk of improvements for you will be bike fit and fitness. Although you didn't mention the type of bike you had when you did that 33. If you did it on a regular road bike with a regular helmet and standard tri suit, then a properly sorted TT bike and aero helmet could give you nearly 2 mins. Perhaps just 1 min if you already had aero bars on the roadbike.

Ya the fit was me just highering the saddle up and down.thats it. it was on a cannondale ironman and i have 3T bars on it and mavic krysium's elite and ultegra components!! so i dont think it was half bad! so id say i could deffo get 2mins easy as only got up on a bike for 2 months this summer before my last tri. so im pickin up all this know how now!! thaqt px stealth look's s**t fast!! like id be very cautious also when riding and all that so that all has to be improved but id be hoping to do a bike split of 2hrs45min for half IM in galway next year etc!!! looks like i'd be edging towards the PX exocet as ur man that i can get it off is bang on and only 20mins down the road if ive any prob's with it!!! whats ur p3c like? fancy sellingit?

    any opinion on the bikes?

The DA is very aggressive for a IM. Pre 09 DAs have build problems around the headtube and fork and get broken very easily.

Exocet - looks bleeding edge - for ten years ago.
    Carbon 50s are great either.

    PX Stealth - oh god.............

The Cannondale IM is a nice bike. I have one and still ride it alot.

You seem to really want people to sell the PX brand to you. You really would be better off get a P2c frame (09s can be picked up for a song) and building that up.

FYI, that planet x offer has changed. Now stg£2,500 not €2,500. Big difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,165 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Actually, Tunney brings up a good point, you could get a P2C (see Slane Cycles, they are usually best for price). Nothing will beat it at it's pricepoint. Perhaps at any pricepoint. I think it has a win at Kona too so no worries on the IM front.

The P2 is one of the most popular TT bikes out there. I counted about 40-50% of the field on P2's or P3's at a TT I did this summer (they all finished behind my oh so unfashionable PX Stealth and by quite a distance too for the most part - which backs up the view that the man makes the difference, the bike is a tiny tiny part of it assuming it fits right - don't lose sight of that !)

If the P3C (with Zipp Sub9/808) is genuinely better than a PX, I will be able to tell you this spring. Early signs are not promising. On the other hand, it is pretty, so that must be worth at least a minute..

PS: I am with Tunney on the PX50 wheels. Had a set, thought they were sh*t. Too soft and fragile.

I'm buying a PX off the same guy in athlone. It arrived last week and I'll be picking it up when the roads improve!! Im not one for recommending one option over the other tho as I'm a newbie like you. Asked on here whether it was a good deal about a month ago and got bog all positives. Then the dura ace option replaced the SRAM red so I went with that.

2011 Cannondale Slices are now all hi-mod, so you could get this

    http://www.biker-boarder.de/shopware/Cannondale-2011-Slice-105-Magnesium-White_detail_12637_32.html

and put a few quid towards some aero rims, I doubt the Ultegra is going to mean much over 105 in a TT.
