    Interesting BBC forecast just there.

Mentioned they were seeing some rain at the coasts in Britain, that this just increased the risk of ice.

I guess the same could apply here...and is applying based on the reports of some.

Gave a fantastic forecast for the east of Ireland for tomorrow, tomorrow night and wednesday. Indeed for tomorrow night, the biggest 'snow feature' in the whole british isles seemed to be over Dublin and the east compared to retreating snow in Britain.

Steady thaw here too but the cloud has finally cleared and with surface winds still from the North-West here, the temp is beginning to drop. Here's hoping we can keep clear skies here and get the temperature as low as possible before the band of precip arrives later!

No snow here in Ringsend beside the coast. Yesterdays snow dumping hasn't melted much at all.

Have a feeling this snow will be confined to the eastern fringes only. Its clear and cold here but not as cold as recently, definitely some ever so slightly milder air aloft...

    Quoted for truth...

I'm starting to think, based on absolutely 0 meteorological knowledge, that they may indeed have got this one wrong...i don't get it, it just doesn't match up!!!!!!

Can confirm thawing in D15 too...the fresh snow from the last band, that was on the roofs, is now thawing.

Eeek! Hopefully temps start falling back again pronto.

Where are the British Isles??? You mean IRELAND and Britain unless you consider yourself to be British. Are you Irish?

Temp -2.1c Dp -3.7, clear skies. Still keeping an eye of that blob off the Wicklow/Wexford coast and hoping it maintains its track and power. If it does it should hit Waterford around 10.30.

    Update

Basically what is happening wrt a thaw and the possibility of marginality in the snow is that as the east winds pick up which are steadily they are whipping up air from the Irish sea which is quite mild. This is tempered as it crosses land. It will mean that temperatures won't dip much below what they are now for the east coast for the rest of the night. Persistent precipitation and the heavier will drop the temp and stop any thawing that is occurring as a result of the temperatures being around 0-2c.

The band over the north UK is gathering and this is the band that is expected to pep up further as it hits the Irish sea. This will then hit the Irish sea coasts from around 3am. Until then light showers will pepper the coast, those which are heavier will contain hail and snow, lighter ones will contain graupel, sleet and rain.

Now as the main band (occlusion) hits tomorrow any precip will readily turn to powder snow as the morning progresses and very cold and dry air will push in behind the front, which origins from Siberia. From Tuesday afternoon any showers will consist of snow or snow grains and will stick to pretty much anything. There will be decent showers of snow hitting the east coast right up until Thursday afternoon.

During Thursday night as a slack low approaches from the Northwest, Ireland looks like remaining in a COL (an area between high and low pressures) winds will be non-existent and conditions over head and on the ground will allow for an extremely cold night, with records surely to be broken in some areas. Now a slight change in synoptic could change this, but temperatures could dip to as low as -15c.

Wednesday - Thursday - Friday look like having dramatically cold maxima and minima.

    Friday - Weekend.

Sees a weak system from the Atlantic move in, upper air tempatures will rise dramatically but this will have little impact on the surface with temperatures anticipated to struggle to get above 0 or 1c through the period.

A truly exceptional freeze, and if the next few days work out, sure to rival any other in the last 50 years to affect the Dublin region and eastern seaboard.

God, I really hope so. It always seems as if the snow event is 12 hours or so away.

If you looked at the weather forecast for Dublin over the weekend you'd have thought we were in for non-stop heavy snow showers whereas the reality has been different for most areas. Don't get me wrong, most places have seen some snow but it only feels like we got loads because what little snow fell didn't melt.

Are met eireann making a hash of this again? There is less snow on the ground here in north Dublin than there was this morning. Some of it has thawed and yet 20cm meant to be on the way. I remember they talked upbig snow event last winter that never happened.

A bold claim and a nice summary for those not of over not overly familiar with the meterogical terms. I'm just about able to remember the big snow of 1982 and if it's anything to compare with that, it's going to be epic.
