    As title suggest, has anyone worked on an e90 316/318 cooling system?

    They have added an oil cooler (beside the oil filter) into the cooling circuit. This seems to have coolant flowing in it before the main stat opens. This is seems to be effecting the coolant flow to the heater matrix.

    I'm thinking the stat is remaining partially open, but wanted to check here to see if someone was familiar with the setup.

    By your description as tho the oil cooler is bypassing the thermostat ..

    When you say beside, do you mean between the block and the oil filter?

    Hi, should correct my original post, had another look at it. It's actually an oil heater, takes warm water from the top of the block, goes via the oil heater the joins the return pipe from the heater matrix back to the block.

    The oil heater is bolted to the base of the oil filter housing.

    It appears there is three parallel paths when the stat is closed;
    1. Via heater matrix
    2. Via Oil heater
    3. Via small pipe back to top up resivor

    The internal heater definitely isn't as good as any other 3 series I've had, have had both e36 & e46.
