heres a link to a site up north. dont know anything about it but has some nice and expensive stuff.

    http://www.percussioncap.co.uk/index.html

i have got stuff from the bloke that runs this site at the teachers club so if you have a problem its easy to catch up with him. he has good stuff and i have bought medals from him in the past.

I think it's worth pointing out to any newer collectors that some of those online links are incredibly expensive.

You would pick many of those items up a lot cheaper either at auctions, militaria fairs (look under events above) or from foreign based online militaria dealers or from classified adverts on militaria forum websites.

Agreed, There are some crazy prices being asked. It seems to be the way in Ireland.

I happened upon a little shop in Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim that has some bits and pieces of militaria for sale - a few random bayonets and some medals - mostly British and South African named medal bars. Sadly also very expensive. They also wanted €75 for an unmarked WW1 EK2 with replaced ribbon, and €50 for one with a broken suspension ring (drilled through the frame with an incorrectly replaced ring and ribbon)!!

I talked to the owner and he tried to convince me that they were very competitive prices... needless to say, I did not purchase.

I have seen similair prices at militaria shops in Normandy, an infamous one in St Mere Eglise springs to mind. The owners know that 99.9% of militaria collectors will laugh at the prices and keep on walking, but all it takes is the 1% of new or non medal collectors to pay and then they stay in business. They are there for years and years so their approach seems to catch enough unsuspecting victims to allow them to stay in business.

Likewise with the online ones, there are some dealers who have items they know are completely overpriced but it costs them nothing to leave them on their site for years and years and years then one day someone knew happens along and thinks this must be a correct price and then they pay it. I know of some dealers with inventory sitting on their websites year in and year out - other collectors I know have commented on this too.

Another tactic i have seen is in captioning items, ie this is a 'Winterschlacht im Osten' medal from Stalingrad . . . .oh really and how do you know that it's from Stalingrad and why should I believe you ?

I presume you mean S***** Line, crazy tourist trap prices. Getting reasonably priced items in Normandy is not easy and you can forget it in towns like St. Mere Eglise especially anytime around June 6th.

Sorry for going slightly off topic.

there is a place in Carlingford that sells a lot of repro Third Reich and 1916 stuff. he does has a few genuine articles as well. if you are interested check him out soon as the Mail on Sunday is spearheading a campaign to have him closed down (apparently selling anything with a swastika on it is akin to selling kiddie porn)

can someone say €75 for a spanish FR-8 bayonet ?

    sick as a dog

I should have questioned the morals of a man who will sell a bayonet to a 14 year old

i got the badges i have at fairs in dublin and some from the internet. i got most from the fair in the North Star Hotel and a couple from the fair in the Teachers Club. if you get a good dealer you can get insignia from e20 up. i bought from the same dealer in the NS Hotel and would go back to him at the next fair if i wanted something and it would build up a bit of a working relationship with him and it was easier to haggle with him and he would give me a discount if i was buying a couple of things from him.

its harder to buy from the net as you dont get the feel of the item and if the item is priced low and looks too good to be true then keep away from it as it is probably fake/restrike , unless thats what you want?. i was caught out a couple of times.

I have a 1916-1921 Service Medal, bought along with a coin collection, on research it is being sold from 450-1100 Euros retail online. Two dealers I offered it too in Belfast and Dublin offered £275 (330euro) and 300euro. It is the non-combatant type without Comrac Bar. Can anyone advise if this is a fair price and would I do better to wait for the Feb Coin Fair at the RDS ?

If it has its original coffin-case these offers might be ok, but if it is just the medal on its own, then jump on it. Lately, these non-combatant medals (without case) usually go for about €200. I picked one up recently for €180. Having the original case will certainly increase the value, but note that a lot of sellers are offering these with the green case from the anniversary medals, claiming that they are the correct case.

    Hi,

I read Georges Street Arcade was mentioned. I remember last time I stopped by I saw alot of fake Third Reich items for sale. One cross in particular that stood out was a fake Mother's Cross. Caution is advised when buying medals but in all fairness I think coins, bank notes and phone cards are his area of expertise.

I have this dealers business card and details for anyone that may be interested.

    Kind Regards

I have been attending militaria fairs both North and South of the border for about ten years. I always pick up business cards, bring them home and put them into a shoe box. I will go through the shoe box when I get home and see what may be of interest to you all.

I wont post personal information such as names or phone numbers because this is against the rules.

Most of the business cards and flyers in mys shoe box contained personal information ie names of the individuals were also used in their e-mails addresses which means I won't post them but here is a small list of what I can post.

I bought from this dealer maybe ten years ago at fairs. He has since given up doing fairs and only uses his website now. A pity because he had in my opinion one of the best selections of militaria.

The only proper walk in shop that I know of is in Co.Meath. If anyone else knows of more please post.

    War Militaria Memorabilia
    Main Street,
    Dunshaughlin,
    County Meath.

I am not sure what it is like as I have never been in it but maybe someone else may know more about it.

Anyone come across the pokey little bric a brac place in Galway City that regards itself as being an 'antique shop'. Run by an elderly woman, sometimes assisted by her daughter. It's near a very nice hotel called the House Hotel.

Called in there recently, 95 Euro for an SA cap badge with one broken fitting for attaching to the hat and 150 Euro for a 1st class Iron Cross Nazi bar awarded allegedly to a holder of a Great War WW 1 iron cross. Am new to the hobby and don't know if these prices are fair?

Also, there is a small tourist gift shop in Cong, Co Mayo that has a section dealing in coins and medals. No German items, British, Irish and French items only. And don't dare ask to photo any item of militaria, he loses the plot if you do.....witnessed him have a 'meltdown' when an elderly man tried to photograph a WW 1 French medal, I felt so sorry for the old gentleman and empathised with him by joining him in walking out of the shop.

I quite like that shop in Galway!
I have picked up some good items there now and again, but you need to know what you are buying because the owner is not very well informed in this area. (Whoever is selling her the German militaria has been slipping her a lot of dodgy items over the years).

The price for the spange for the first class iron cross is actually very low (if it were the real thing.... which unfortunately it is not. (this is the one with the RZM markings an the reverse, yes?).

The story however is accurate(ish)... when someone was awarded an iron cross in WW1, and again in WW2, they received this wiederholungsspange instead of another cross. There are two versions - the first and second class.

Here's a genuine unmarked Deumer wiederholungsspange for comparison. Genuine versions usually fetch anywhere form €350-€550 (uncased) and depending on condition.

I wasn't aware of the shop in Cong but will be sure to check it out next time I'm passing through (complete with camera). The owner sound like a cantankerous old sod, I'm looking forward to meeting him already!!

    Regards - Dan

    P.S.
As a newcomer to this hobby, I feel I should warn you (especially in the German WW2 area) that knowledge is your best friend. Do not 'impulse buy' as this is a very expensive way of finding out that you have been burned with a fake.
Practically everything that was ever produced bearing the swastika from 1920-1945 has since been re-produced (some as very obvious cheap fakes while others are so good that careful examination is needed to spot them), so before you commit to buy, ALWAYS check your item either here of on some of the other forums.

    Good luck in the future!

    Thanks Dan,

For all that helpful information, images and such a swift reply. I nearly bought the piece in question from the good lady. What do you make of the SA cap badge she has on offer for 95 Euro? She also has a Hitler Youth belt buckle, but I have one of those myself that I bought from an Irish dealer who currently has a website dealing in historical militaria.

As a matter of interest what is your opinion of such websites, I know there are a couple of other Dublin based ones. Enjoy your visit to Cong, see if you can find the sign in the shop that says no photos.

    Regards and many thanks again,
    SG

    Hi,

I buy all my TR items from websites. It is like what Dan said you need to know what your buying first and do research as militaria dealers make mistakes too.

All the best with your collecting and enjoy the hobby.
