Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It sounds like your laser could be on it's way out. There are several things you can do.

You can adjust the resistance on the laser (the laser pot) and lower it down slightly, thereby increasing laser power. This should remedy the situation and is first port of call. You need a small screwdriver and a multimeter that can measure resistance

    You can replace the laser.

You can replace the DVD drive with one of the exact same model, swapping the circuit boards to stop any faffing about with cracked DVD drive firmware.

Return to Microsoft if your console is unopened :D

It isn't "time to change the system", nor anywhere near it. Your system is displaying all the signs of a laser that is wearing out, not worn out. It still has life in it and even if it doesn't there are plenty of options - save your money, you can buy 3 or 4 games when you get the problem fixed :D

First off have you, or has anybody else, ever opened the console? If not then you can send it back to Microsoft out of warranty and they will replace the DVD drive. It'll cost you some money, but we're only talking €20-€30 if I recall correctly.

If you have opened the console, or you prefer not to go back to Microsoft, then it still isn't the end of the world. Anybody who is handy with a multimeter (and really, it isn't that hard) can give option #1 a go. The process is very easy and consists of the following steps: "Open DVD Drive, Take a reading from the pot, twist pot a fraction, take another reading. Repeat previous steps until the initial reading has dropped in value by 0.2. Resassemble, put in game, test. Repeat all previous steps until either the drive plays games (success) or you reach 3.2 (time to move on to option 2 or 3)".

If you don't want to do it yourself there are people over in Console Modding who can do this for you, and even go so far as to purchase and fit a replacement DVD drive. Just send a private message to anybody in your area who offers "DVD Flashing" as a service on Xbox 360.

Even if you have to post your DVD drive to somebody you'll still save close on €120. Going out to buy a brand new one because of this little problem is like buying a new car when you get a puncture.
