Just for the record, I have no doorbell, and it is a very rare thing for me to miss someone knocking on my door. I knock on most doors because you can never tell if the doorbell works, and would you believe, my friends let me in. When they hear the knocking on the door.

I was going to delete the first paragraph, but I agree with that too!!! I too don't have a doorbell, the other day, a knock on the door, went downstairs, postman with a package, a couple of dvds, I think.

I normally get packages delivered by van, no probs there, or go to the depot, they're open early and late....

If he rang the bell and it didnt work then fair enough it was the OPs fault for being upstairs and not hearing the knock. Not ringing the bell at all though is the postman lacking simple common sense/logic. Extremely annoying.

Hate An Post. Collection depots that only open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday and post offices which close for lunch between 12:45 and 14:15... an hour and a half! Clearly a brilliant and customer focused irish organisation. :rolleyes:

Yes, I reckon the OP's assumption being that they wouldn't have to literally wait staring out the window all day as the postman wouldnt be so incompetent as to not bother pressing the large button which notifies the people inside the house that theres someone at the door. Simple stuff really. Or so most people would think.

I had a postman for years with no problems what so ever he was quiet but very efficient. In the last two years we've had two newer postmen with nothing but wrong mail, not even the same county. I'm the last house in the estate, so dump the wrong ones on me.

Our postman is dead on,our post man before him was the same. So much so that if you werent home,or you were putting on pants and were unable to answer the door he would either leave the package inside for you or to one of the neighbours should the door be locked.

lol, kettle calling the pot black! .... by your logic no business would open outside 9 - 5 right? How about supermarkets... they need customers and yet they open late..why? Becuase people who pay for goods and services do so with money which they got from working 9-5! :eek:

We dont expect posties to come delivering items til 10pm but it would only be common sense for the depot to be open til that time so we can actually get what we order. Funnily if we had been at home to get the delivery during the day we would be jobless and hence not buying goods from the net hence an post would have very little need for a lot of the work force seeing as it would pretty much be only bills being delivered.

I work in a consumer facing job and I work out of normal hours for some weeks, its only normal. Dont feel resentment for it sure; I myself use businesses that open out of normal hours when I not in work , turn around is only fair play

My own postie is a bad joke. On more than one occasion I have checked online order numbers to find "delivery attempt - no answer".. post box was empty with no delivery notice.... what? Did he expect me to read his f**king mind and have my "parcel sense tingle!" to run to the depot????
No explination from the depot other than he must have been out of slips?? So basically "tough s**t" be happy you got it in the end...... an post... class act, they should be proud of the fine job their doing. :rolleyes:

Would it not make more sense to leave parcels for collection at the nearest post office rather than some "depot" in the @r$€; end of nowhere.

As for sending packages to work/family/friends etc a lot of mail order companies will only ship to the address ones credit card is registered to.

I see two major problems with what people are saying here:

1) Why do you think you are due a flood of mail each and every day? Does that happen anyone? Very rarely. I mean, it's not uncommon for me to go a week without a letter, all I'm expecting are a few bills, my payslip and the occasional card from someone or something or unless I've ordered something online... it's hardly as if I'm expecting a big pile or personal mail each and every day.

2) The snow argument makes no sense to me. They deliver each and every weekday that it is possible to do so. In times of snow/ice, some areas can become dangerous. I mean, if some people won't even make the trip two and from work when the roads in their area are this dangerous, how do you expect someone who's job is to be outdoors in those conditions all day to continue to operate in a safe way? I mean in general they are pretty good at keeping the service going, they are often out in horrendous conditions in our country and it's only really on a rare occasion if ever that deliveries are cancelled or suspended for any small amount of time.

People never fail to amaze me with their level of self-entitlement.

I'm in D5. No post all last week so I went to the local sorting office. Queue out the door of people collecting their post. However, they wouldn't give out parcels, all I got was a handful of bills (great!) and half my Christmas shopping still being held.

My dad was a postman for years and had to deliver post in hail, rain and yes, snow. Nothing but a bunch of nancy boys working there now!

Due to fairly hazardous conditions in certain areas of Dublin lots of routes were returned. Posties had falls, injuries, trips to the hospital, the list was endless. Deliveries should return to normal soon enough though, dozens of casuals from the summer were brought in to help clear the backlog.

Our Postie does the rounds on a push bike so he would'd be able to carry anything to bulky I guess, and he's been on foot in the bad weather. Postman in my last place on the other hand, defied the laws of physics by what he could get to fit through a letterbox, without damaging anything, to boot.

I ordered over 10kilos parcel from one of the german music mega stores. It was supposed to be a courier delivery (not standard mail). An Post delivered it on Friday at 8.30, when there was no one in the building yet. They left a note and now they urge me to come into the post office to pick it up

1) I won't go pick it up cause I'm working from 8 till 5 and have no chance to be there neither just after opening, nor just before closing
2) I won't pick it up cause it weights over 10kg

The whole f**** reason of getting a heavy parcel shipped with a courier is to have it delivered to my door, isn't. However, An Post is turning the thing around and making me think that it is me who should apologize that I wasn't in the building at the time of delivery

I already wrote the german store and asked them to sort this out, even tho I know it's f*** an post fault. However, after all, it's the store who is responsible for the merchandise until I have it in my hands. So I figure, if the store gets enough complaints about an post, they will change their contractor back to DHL, which they used to ship here in the past

Once had something go missing on me in ten years... so generally found them grand at delivering parcels. There's been a bit of delay recently but it's forgiveable under the circumstances.

What I would like to see though is some effort, somehow, at making it easier to collect parcels especially in situations like the OP's. Open the depot later so people can collect or at the weekend. Their opening hours are generally poor and not suited to regular working hours. As a national service they should cater for that (hell, I'd even pay an excess of €1 per item if I had to collect it at the weekend. There - a money making idea!).

I've had mostly good service from An Post, with only one time where an item had to be signed for, I missed it and had to visit the Depot and some new guy behind the counter who was useless couldn't find the item and it then became lost. Other than that it's all been perfect, but it's like any business, some eejit might do something stupid and give everybody a bad name but for the most part they're alright.

Not sure on subsidies but I don't think they are the same as Eircom i.e. fully privatised.

They don't get subsidies from government money

But as to who owns it? I'm not sure, it's probably Minister for Communications, I'm guessing here

Why is it An Posts fault? If you order courier service you should have got it. they send it regular post.

Nope, they are a semi state, backed by the government but run as a commercial enterprise with no subsidies but if things went belly up the service would continue because of the semi state status. Basically they can never close down because they are financially unviable because the state guarantees we must have a postal service.

As for deliveries, I live in the middle of nowhere and have had no interruption in service, when I don't get post I relaise I just don't have post. Was -11 here last night, theres snow everywhere and I can guarantee the postman is on his rounds, albeit slowly.

Maybe when your postman gets his wings attached after Christmas he can fly over the snow to get your stuff to you :-)
