    Indeed.

This year out of all the hip hop I listened to Dessa, Big Boi, Kanye, The Roots and Shad were head and shoulders above everyone.

Nad and Damien Marley were the best of the best.

Not sure what order yet, I will have to give it a think.

So then what was the best albums of 2010 for ye folks?

Right now Kanye, Big Boi, The Roots. I'll have to go back through the releases this year though.

Big Boi for me was pretty incredible

I know it's not technically an album but J Cole's latest mixtape was unbelievable. Haven't stopped listening to it since I got it, to the extent I had to seriously rush an essay last week due to many hours lost from just day dreaming listening to it. Haven't felt this way about an upcoming album since the Chili Peppers' album back in '06 (because it was my first Chili's album release to be around for so to speak).

I'm ashamed to say I've still to hear The Roots' album and also Kanye's new one but I will as soon as possible

maybe we should give it another month??

I think J. Cole's "friday night lights" mixtape is really slept on.
Amazing quality for a free mixtape.

    Also.

    Hiphop surprise of the year?
As in, "wow... I thought that would be crap, but I really like it..."

Diggy Simmons "Air Bourne", I can't believe a 15 year old made something THAT good.

i think 2010 has been a good year for hip hop to be honest.

    my standouts were

j.cole : countless top quailty material and mixtapes need i say anymore, hugely talented both as an mc and producer.

knaan : blew up this year to an extent with the offical world cup anthem "wave your flag", this man is a proper talent there's not many around with his sound infact iv never heard anyone tell a story in his raps like him since 2pac. look foward to his next album.

lloyd banks : released so much top notch free material all year round, he's the one who started all the free music with blue fridays, kanye and swiss soon followed, banks dropped a very good album too in hfm2 aswell as countless mixtapes. a very talented lryicist.

b.o.b : really like this chap, his sound is just different and he stands out from the crowd, his album was class and he just dropped "no genre" last week a mixtape that is up there with j.cole's effort as the best mixtape of the year.

as far as albums it was a great year, big boi released a solid banger of an album, so did eminem who pretty much confirmed himself as the no 1 mc my a longshot, kanye released a very good album also late on and so did t.i with no mercy which is pretty good.

but my standout album of the year was distant relatives by nas and damien marley, the pair are a great combination a kind of hip hop meets reggae sound going on there, cant belive it wasnt mentioned already.

biggest letdown of the year for me was ice cube's "i am the west" was expecting so much more but he just didnt deliver hopefully he'l come good with his next effort as im a big fan of his.

from a most entertaining standpoint it had to be that porn star muppet brian pumper he was hilarious.

Main ones that come to mind are Curren$y - Pilot Talk 1/2, Earl Sweatshirt - EARL, Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot, Freeway - Stimulus Package, Yelawolf - Trunk Muzik.

Haven't listened to as much as I should this year. There's a lot of stuff I've missed.

The only things that come to mind are El-P's mega mix and stuff from Oddisee. Oddisee actually produces the Trek Life album i mentioned earlier. He has a bandcamp page with loads of free EPs on it.

I think Blockhead had something this year as well that was quite good.

EDIT: Paper Tiger's album Made Like This is an excellent instrumental record.

I've been going back through some of albums released this year over the past week and I've settled on my top 5.

    01. Kanye - MBDTF
    02. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot
    03. The Roots - How I Got Over
    04. Curren$y - Pilot Talk
    05. Kno - Death Is Silent

    J. Cole - Friday Night Light, Pilot Talk II, Prof Green - Alive Til I'm Dead would all be knocking about the Top 10. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach too if you consider it Hip-Hop which it kind of is. Recovery would possibly round out the top 10 or maybe Marco Polo & Ruste Juxx.

Let downs would be MOTM 2 and Distant Relatives. I'd have loved for Mic Tyson to have been released this year.

Paper Tiger was solid enough although compared to stuff like Flying Lotus it was a bit underwhelming sadly. :(
I must check out Kno, heard nothing but good things.

Just started listening to that other Oddfuture album from Tyler The Creator. It's pretty much just as good as the Earl Sweatshirt one. Production is just amazing. They've got really interesting writing styles too. Kind of post-Doom newschool ****. Nobody else sounds like that crew do.
