Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    hi,

What is the life expectancy of an automatic gear box? I'm lookin at a '99 S80 with 145000 on the clock for 1500eur. Looks in fairly good nick.

    wat you folks think?

How long is a piece of string dude?

It all depends on how it was cared for, oil changes/being dogged etc. I'm not sure of the intervals on the Volvo but some autoboxes require an oil change every 40k kms

    sorry bout the vagueness.

Yes these are things which I must find out. I dont know much about it at the moment but am goin to see the guy over the next few days. Is that a normal price for that car assuming its in good condition? I've heard bad things about auto gear boxes failing and costing the earth

Well if anything goes wrong with it the cost of repair would no doubt be more than the car is worth, something to bear in mind. BMW's with their nonsense 'sealed for life' gearboxes can start acting up by 100,000 miles, no doubt exactly because the oil is never changed in them.

Imo, it's always a good idea, when buying a used car with an automatic gearbox, to have the oil and filter changed (in the gearbox!) immediately, unless you are certain from the service history (check with the garage) that it has been done recently.

    Not your ornery onager
