Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi im not sure where to put this, im looking to convert VHS tapes into some digital format so i can edit it on a pc/mac.

i know im going to need some hardware, but what? is the cheapest/best route to find a vhs-to-dvd converter online (where?) and then rip those dvd's, or can i get a faster option?

ive also considered a capture card plugged into the pc, and just playing the tape at the same time, but im not entirely sure how to do that.

anyone care to help/advice/ point me to the right forum?

    thanks!

The above is what you are looking for, have one of the earlier ones (Dazzle Platinum) and its great, the cheaper ones don't have hardware encoding so be aware of that.

Or if you already have a HDD recorder ( not sure if a sky box will do it ), you could plug a video player directly into a HDD recorder.
Press play on the video and record on the HDD recorder.

IIRC the Sky (Pssst) Box won't let you remove the HDD and read it in a PC as its encoded.

You can buy VHS-to-DVD recorders all over the place, fairly cheap too. The parents have one and it did the trick converting all those old tapes to DVD flawlessly.

I dunno what model it is, could be one that came from Lidl / Aldi. (Not sure)

Hey Tea_Bag, did you decide on what you're going to do? I'm also looking to digitise a stack of family VHSs. I have read up on how to do the software encoding side of things, but I need to buy the hardware that can receive a VCR signal.

I've seen a lot of those VHS-PC/DVD converters, but I'm looking for as high as possible quality capture, and I don't think those devices do a stunning job as far as I'm aware.

I also had this query and I asked a friend from youtube, Alfred Diblasi, a real good tech person, and he said:
research the reviews and select a quality analog to digital converter that is in your budget. Seek out Elgato, read your reviews, make sure your system is up to spec to work with the device. I also suggest digitizing to a dedicated, external hard drive set as a mirrored RAID array (Guardian Maximum from Other World Computing) so the converted data is safe.
