    I haven't read that much by female authors, but going on the evidence of The Bell Jar and much of her poetry, I reckon Sylvia Plath could have written many great books if she hadn't died so young. :(

    Barbara Kingsolver is another good female writer. I've only read The Poisonwood Bible so far, but I'm certainly planning to read more of her work.

    JK Rowling, regardless of whether you like Harry Potter or not (and I thought the ending of the last book was dreadful), certainly knows how to write good characters that keep your interest. Harry Potter wouldn't have been the phenomenon it became if it wasn't for her humour and her ability to create gripping, intriguing and occasionally quite complex plots.
