After a few threads on here I started looking into overclocking (1st time thinking about it )

I've looked at a good few videos and have an idea of the steps to take.

But I dont know what parts are best to buy to be able to handle over clocking.

Whats best to go with AMD or Intel ?

I'd like to get a final speed of about 3.4gig (quad) what CPU should I be looking at.. Also motherboard.

I made this up quickly I picked the case as it has 3 fans installed,

    Thanks for your input :)

Assuming your budget is a bit flexible:

You could do with a slightly better CPU

    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=26625&agid=1242

Might be worth it to get RAM with slightly better timings if you plan to overclock. Not crucial though.

Get a HD 6850 or a 5770, whichever suits your budget better. The 450 isn't really worth it for that price range.

You could probably get a cheaper case as well.

    The rest looks good.

Im biast, but, the i5-760 and gtx460 1GB gpu are both so so easy to overclock.

You could easily pop the 760 up to 3.5GHZ by slightly increasing the voltage, in my case I didnt have too! 4GHZ is simple enuff too.

The GTX460 is slightly more expensive than the card you mentioned, but with the new ati cards coming out recently theyve gone down in price. Using MSI afterburner you can easily overclock the card. The standard core speed is 675mhz but i run mine @ 850mhz and I didnt have to change the voltage or anything.. just slid the slider up and ran a benchmark!

If you buy a board that supports SLI you have the future option of adding another 460, which work EXTREMLY well together. Theres many benchmarks out there showing a 90% fps increase in modern games.

Forgot to mention heat noise and power consumption. More reasons why these components come up trumps!

Good luck op, if you have any questions feel free to pm.

thanks for the replys... I would maybe spend a max of €600 on the build.. But i'd need everything for that.

It i got the http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=26625&agid=1242 what speed could i safely clock it to ? would i get it to 3.6 or 3.8 ? Would i need to add extra cooling ? Even if the case has 3 fans ?

I wont be really using this for gaming, More movie editing and 3D design ( hobbies not my job ) I normaly play my games on the PS3 .

I do need HDMI on the card as I would be hooking it up to the TV to watch movies.

Speed is relative - higher megahertz does not equate to equally high performance anymore.

e.g. an i5 760 at 4.0ghz is generally faster than the AMD 955 at 4.0ghz because it seems to scale better

There are 6 core chips out now from AMD that are great with video editing, perhaps look into them?

Is overclocking part of the hobby or do you just need the highest speed possible?

I believe you can just about fit an i5 760 and ATI 5770 into that budget

Here is a build I recommended for someone yesterday

    €635 delivered:

    Phenom II X6
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...4042&agid=1242
    4GB A-Data RAM
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...8632&agid=1192
    Generic DVD-RW
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...29466&agid=699
SF Amazon 550W (Out of stock until the 3rd Dec)
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...30069&agid=240
    Spinpoint F3 1TB
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...28152&agid=689
    MSI Radeon HD 6850
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...9442&agid=1004
    MSI 870 mobo
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...8554&agid=1232
    CoolerMaster 690 case
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/artic...38379&agid=631

To get it within budget, I'd drop the GPU to a 5770 if you don't plan on gaming a whole lot. You can change the case to a thermaltake V4. I'd then add a CPU cooler and 1 or 2 case fans. That should come up less than 600.

While the i5 760 and GTX460 are awesome, I would say they would be more suited to gaming.

No overclocking is not a hobby, I just want a better speed for my other hobbies :)

    just looked at this video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFGPJEIVPto

He overclocks a AMD 6 core from 2.8 to 3.5 on a stock cooler.. so this might be something for me :)
