Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Hey guys,

A buddy of mine is giving me his old 360, he said the system is fine, but the disc drive is dodgy. Is it a big deal to replace the drive? Does anyone know of any good instructional guides on how to do it? I presume its not just as simple as swapping in a good drive?

    Thanks

Adjust the laser pots first, see if that helps. Most of the time the dodgy drive is just a laser issue.

And no, it isn't as simple as swapping in a good drive. Best course of action if you want to replace the drive is to buy a drive of the exact same model and swap the circuit boards between drives. No messing around then :)

Gets more complicated when the circuit board is the faulty part, but it's not a certainty yet :)

    Guide is simple:
    Get drive out console
Get dvd key out dvd drive
Ad dvd key to new dvd
    Put new dvd to console
    Done.
Most cases you need dedicaded hardware, best is via6412 card. Its only when your drive is non liteon, otherwise is bit complex.

but if OP wants to go online he has to get the same model and in this case it's easier to swap pcbs

Not really, you can avoid soldering if you want. Just snip the wires controlling the drive tray, swap the boards and rejoin wires using a method you're comfortable with (i.e. twist and insulate). Soldering the points would be a better idea though :)
