Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Query about being categorised as a casual worker

Does anyone know the criteria for being classed as a casual worker?

The nature of my work is short term contracts (anything from 2 weeks to 3 months) so I'm used to signing on now and again between jobs.the last time I signed off they said they'd keep my claim open so there'd be no hassle getting my payments started again. Anyway I'm supposed to be employed until the end of next week but because of the severe weather work was cancelled this week and most likely next week too. I went down to the welfare office to see if I could claim for this time off and the woman I spoke to said that I am a casual worker and I should have been filling out dockets every week stating how many days I was working. I had never even heard of these dockets. I explained that although I am on contract work it is always full time, 5 days a week, so I wouldn't be entitled to anything while I'm working. She insisted I am a casual worker and technically still signed on so now I have to send forms to my previous and current employer asking them to detail my pay and hours week by week since August (the last time I was unemployed). I find this a bit strange as I have a P45 from my previous employer stating my net income and I'm not trying to claim any money from the state for the period I was working for them.

I can see how being classed as a casual worker would be useful if your hours changed week to week or you didn't know whether you'd be working but I'm just not sure I really fit the criteria or what the criteria even is. As I said I'm used to being on short term contracts and I've never even heard any of my colleagues mention this docket system so I'm slightly worried there's been a misunderstanding and the mountain of paperwork I've been given might not even apply to me. the woman seemed to think I might be entitled to social welfare for the weeks I've been working and I know this isn't the case as I've had full pay. It seems like an awful waste of my employers time and the time of the staff in the welfare office to be going through my income week by week like this.

Anyway sorry this is so long winded.. I'm just back from the welfare office and totally confused! Would really appreciate knowing if anyone else on full-time contract work has been classed as a casual worker?!

    Thanks :)
