Work lights - bulb wattage ratings for lamps

I need a really bright worklamp with a fairly directable beam. A typical Anglepoise style lamp has an old filament bulb max of about 60 watt. Could I use a more powerful CFL bulb as I am presuming that they do not get as hot ?. What is the brightest CFL that is available in a normal fitting ?.

Has anyone come across a good directable lamp that is portable, directable & capable of high output ?.

Go LED if you want directional, should have a high enough output these days...

you could try sourcing a lamp that takes a gx-53 t2 lamp. they have a very high output for their size and are cfl. the fittings ive seen are not your usual cone shape but more a flat circular type, or other slightly larger lamps take a circular flouresent which allows you to look trough the centre of the ring or have a magnifying section.

Does the anglepoise fitting have a relector to enhance directionability?
