    Liverpool vs Aston Villa
    liverpool-logo-wallpaper-15.jpg?w=224&h=300...m140385.png

    Venue: Anfield
    Date: Monday, 6 December Kick-off: 2000 GMT
    Coverage: Sky Sports 1

    Liverpool:

    Doubtful: Gerrard (hamstring)
Injured: Agger (calf), Carragher (shoulder), Spearing (ankle)

    Aston Villa:

    Suspended: A Young (one match)
    Doubtful: Bannan (groin), Beye (ankle)
Injured/unavailable: Albrighton (appendicitis), Delph, Heskey, Petrov & Reo-Coker (all knee), Sidwell (Achilles), Weimann (ankle)

With Bannan looking like he is now sidelined most likely and with the game seemingly too soon for a NRC return from injury Villa will be once again threadbare in CM. Add to that the fact that Young is suspended and Albrighton still out with appendicitus we only really have Downing on the wings unless Pires starts or Ireland/Gabby is pushed out there.

Can only take a guess atm but something like this is imagineable:

    ........................Friedel

    Young.......Collins.........Dunne.....Warnock

    .................Clark..........Hogg
    Ireland......................................Downing
    .................Gabby......Carew

only real impact subs: Pires, Delfouneso

Liverpool may not be at full strenght either with Gerrard doubtfull but given Villas recent run of results and the form of now key fit players such as Dunne, Carew and argueably Ireland (without Young/Bannan his creativity will be needed) I'm not very confident.

optimistic prediction would be a win but Villa need to play a lot better to get that result than they have recently and Will also need to hope Gabby's got his shooting boots on today. realistically and id probably be happy once they dont lose as this is a great opportunity for Liverpool to climb up a few places in the table.

If liverpool win they go from 12th to joint 8th
If Villa win they go from 16th to 11th

Much as the odds are stacked against the mighty Villa, i think there is still enough quality there for us to sucker punch Pool with our pace up front, to that end I'd like to see Gabby & The Fonz starting rather then Carew.

Hogg & Clark have been growing in stature with each game, so i think they'll acquit themselves well enough against Pools poor performing middle.

The defence is the concern, if Torres is in the mood, then i can see the out of form/injured backline of Dunne n' Collins rolling over at some point.

Hopefully not a repeat of this fixture last season. Despite our dismal away form, we have been pretty decent at home the last few games. Hopefully more positivity tonight, as this is a game Liverpool should be winning given Villas injusry problems.

Expecting Houllier to get a great reception as well.

Villa are one of those teams that I hope do pretty well over the course of a season, but not tonight. ;)

Villa's form has not been great, but I am wary of the fact that a win for them would see them leapfrog Liverpool in the table.

I think that if Hodgson sets Liverpool up to play as they did for the first 60 minutes against Spurs, and not have the team sitting 15 yards too deep at home, then a win could be on the cards.

Hodgson needs to be proactive in his tactics though and needs to keep it simple, because if he takes a negative approach to the game, then Ged will quickly adapt to that, plus trying to turn the game into a tactical battle would be football suicide as Hodgson is nowhere near Ged's level tactically.

I think I will go for a Liverpool win with a few scares along the way.

    3-1 to Liverpool.

1-2 Villa for me. This is when Houllier makes his first of many turns around his square.

    Likely lineups

    ........................Friedel

    Young.......Collins.........Dunne.....Warnock

    .................Clark..........Hogg
    Ireland......................................Downing
    .................Gabby......Carew

    .....................Reina
    Johnson......Skrtel.....Kryakios......Konchesky
    Kuyt.........Meireles....Lucas.........Maxi
    ...............Torres.....N'Gog

    Villa 4-0

Villa gave us a good hammering last year in this fixture.

It won't be an easy game.

Whether Liverpool win this game or not will probably come down to Torres. Hopefully he has his shooting boots on

this should be a Liverpool win, but Villa's pace up front worries me.

i'm going to go for a very optimistic 3-1, but i wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot of goals in this.

Hodgson, for all his negativity at times this year, seems to have let go of the leash slightly recently; and 4-4-2, with N'Gog giving natural support to Torres, seems to be working ok.

    1-1.

    Liverpool to score first.

This will a shocker 0-0 or 1-0 to the reds.

Its games like this that John W Henry needs to sit through.

1-1 or 0-0 with 20 minutes to go, Liverpool shut-up-shop and go for the draw, Villa get a late goal from a set-piece and win the match. Sky get stable viewing figures because everyone has fallen asleep watching the game, Andy Gray points things out with coloured arrows.

I have a bad feeling about this match, I think the best we (Liverpool) can get is a draw, but I think Villa will win.

For some reason (perhaps reputations more than current form) I think this is going to be a great game. I'll go for 3-2 Villa

Have faith grasshopper, Manager Kess has predicted a 3-1 win for Liverpool tonight. :D

Lucas and Meireles should be in the centre together, so if we keep a high line, and with Soto marshalling the defence, I think we can capitalise on Villa's poor form/injuries.

Then once tonight's game is done, I hope Ged takes Villa on a nice unbeaten run.

2 mediocre teams fighting for mid-table respectively. 0-0

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 420 ✭✭RustySpoon

Reasons this will be a great game:

There has been at least 3 goals in every Monday night game bar one drab 0-0
Games under lights are just better from an atmosphere, real football feel
Houllier return will give a bit of a feel good factor to the Liverpool crowd
2 defenses that on occasions are prone to an error or two
Good forward options on both sides

Resons why this will be a snoozefest:

    2 safety first managers
Villa missing a raft of good or promising players
Both attacks not performing to their peak due to injury/lack of form etc

On balance I'm going for a 3-2 win for the home side.

I'm hoping for a one nill win to 'Pool with Paul Konchesky scoring, purely because he's in my fantasy football team. Even an assist for an unfancied player that nobody else in most leagues has like Meireles will do.

Other than my wildest dreams coming through though, I think it'll be nil all. Neither team are very good going forward at present.

    Liverpool 3-1 Aston Villa
    Torres 22' - Agbonlahor 34'
    Johnson 51'
    Torres 78'

Guessing the minutes might be a bit overboard :D

    Liverpool 1 - 2 Aston Villa
    Agbonlahor '32
    Clark '61
    Ngog '79

    Boom!

Liverpool to win this 2-0. Hopefully Ged will get a great reception from the crowd too.

    Villa back 5 is obvious.

The other 6 will line up like this IMO.

    Hogg---Clark

    Ireland
    Downing

    Gabby
    Carew

Gabby will have to offer some width as Ireland simply doesn't have that in his game.

I'd play the Fonz over Carew but I don't think Houllier will.

    Liverpool to win 2-0.

GH to claim he built the team that won the match.

(i'm kidding, i quite like Houllier, apart from his Fowler-hate)

    Ireland needs to play well.

I think Liverpool will probably win this. Villa looked good against us but I haven't been very impressed since.

1-0 or 2-1. More than likely a boring game.

I thought it was Thompson that Fowler had the falling out with.

I thought it was Thompson that Fowler had the falling out with.

He had a falling out with Thommo. Basically involving Thompson on a power trip if you believe Fowler's side of the story. Fowler hit Thompson on the back of the head with a ball at training. Thompson flipped.

But he has a whole chapter in his book about Houllier. They didn't get on at all, and there is no doubt Fowler was used very poorly by Gerard. He was constantly dropped after goal-scoring performances. Now i've no doubt Robbie was a bit of a chancer, and i wouldn't go as far as to say Houllier ruined him as a player. But he didn't do anything to help him.

I'm unreasonably optimistic that Liverpool will win this.
I'm going for 2-0 with Soto and Torres to score.

Giggled like a mad man at the lad who thought the match was on UTV coz a Villa fan signed off a post with UTV (Up The Villa) :D

I think it's more the other way around. I took a serious turn against Fowler after reading his auto-biography where absolutely everyone was to blame for his problems but him.

Has the Liverpool team been announced ?

Edit - Found it on twitter.

SiClancy Simon Clancy - Apparently this is the team tonight: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Konchesky, Kuyt, Lucas, Meireles, Maxi, Torres, Ngog

Edit again - Pepe is Captain :D

Rumour that Clark might be out. Herd and Hogg might be playing.
    Oh man!

Im hoping Liverpool win this tonight , my accumulator depends on it!
Villa looked very dodgy at the back against Arsenal so hopefully they will be again tonight , i do see goals in the game with possibly Maxi getting on the scoresheet. 2-1 to the Pool

Could we see Collins or Warnock in DCM with Culleur going into the back 4?

Villa are a shambles at the moment and decimated by injuries, Liverpool should put 4-5 past them.

Im a Villa fan, and usually one of the more optimistic ones on here even if I do say so myself but Villa are in terrible form and torn apart by injuries. It sounds as if we may have Herd and Hogg as our starting CMs with Ireland out wide, we have already used the kitchen sink and injured it, if Liverpool fans cant be confident now I dont know when you will be. Things arent all that bad under big bad woy, sure he makes gaffs from time to time and is no tactical genious but compare the two potential teams on paper and his job should not be too hard tonight.

Having said all that I still believe this Villa side are capable of getting a result here but it will take a very big performance especially from defense which is an area that has let Villa down big time considering we have had first choice defenders available its just they have been underperforming.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,879 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

just read in the pool thread Torres's wife just went into labour and the spaniard is out. cant confirm but thats good news for Villa if true. Minus Gerrard and Torres Liverpool are much less a scary prospect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,518 ✭✭✭matrim

    Seems Villa's team is

    Friedel
    Young Collins Dunne Warnock
    Albrighton Ireland Hogg Clark Downing
    Gabby

And as said, apparently no Torres for Liverpool as his wife is in Labour

Really don't know how this one will go..Yea Torres out:) Come on Villa:D
