Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Whats that noise??..clutch? gearbox?

First off I should say the car is a 2002 Audi A4 1.9 TDi.
So there I was driving back from Galway to Mayo this morning, I was just on the way into Tuam when I heard this knocking sound from what I imagine was the gearbox/ clutch area.

I immediately pulled over and stopped, but the knocking sound continued. I turned off the car, started it back up and it still continued! I put it in 1st and moved forward out of the way. But as I revved to move on the sound stopped.
I knew of a SIMI garage in Tuam so I continued on but as my luck goes they were closed for dinner.

I had the car turned off in the yard and when I went back to it, the noise had gone completely. On the way back it returned momentarily at idle revs...but when I accelerate it stops.
It cant be anything major as the car was grand for 99% of the journey, but at the same time I'm concerned that it might be something that will crop up in the future?:(

    Any help appreciated!!

Have you tried to locate the sound with the bonnet up ?

Brought it to a local mechanic (not my usual, but he was very helpful), tested it out and put it up on the lift.

He reckons its the clutch slipping and it'll eventually need replacing!
Called the Audi Dealer around here and at the moment a new clutch is €1100....fitted and all!

Just my luck as the timing belt needs replacing in the next few weeks too!!!:(

I'm currently having a similar problem with my volvo S40. Changed the clutch and that didn't solve the problem!

Is the noise there at idle revs in neutral and does it go away when you press the clutch?

Luckily the noise has now stopped, but it was there both in neutral and when I pressed the clutch. I turned off the car when I got to the garage and when I came back the knocking was gone?!?!

As it is, I can get each gear perfectly, but there is a little resistance (almost like a scrape) when I press the clutch.

Think I'll book it into the Audi dealer tomorrow, they'll give it a one hour check for €70....it'd be worth it if they gave me the true fault as I have a mechanic in the family that would do the job.
