If anybody has any ideas could you chip in please. Right so the problem is im getting my rifle threaded but the guy doing it is a machine shop guy so is not allowed to be in possesion of a firearm, he only handles the barrels. so i need to get the barrel out of the action myself and im unsure of how to go about it.

i reckon i could get it out with 2 sets of wooden v blocks and some elbow grease, but when i go to put it back on is it just a case of screwing back on till the marks line up?:confused:

Im not too sure nor not going to go into it but im not sure he can even have a barrel......

depending on what tool your using to rotate the reciever you have to be carefull not to stress or warp the reciever.

technically yes .... all you need do is realign the the marks .. however it is no guarentee that your headspace will be correct. Personally id never take a chance so id but the headspace gauges.

would you not just arrange a time to meet this guy take the bolt and mag out of the gun and wait with him while he is threading the rifle i would also take the scope of;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 193 ✭✭FOXHUNTER1

I would agree with Gunhappy the barrel is still considered a firearm with or without the action.

if i was present while he did the work would this be above board
the othe option is to get the local gunsmith to remove the barrel then get it threaded and take it back to the gunsmith to get the barrel put back on

just give it to Fergal White (RFD) and he'll thread it for €90, and will give you a nice crown while you are at it!
Someone must have been winding you up about taking a barrell off.

If you are there when it is done it should not be a problm

Easy way = Drop mag, take out bolt, open action screws, take off scope (rings and all as it makes for easier remounting) clamp barrel, action wrench and turn, barrel off, get threaded, recrowned, do over in reverse checking alignment and headspacing is the same. - Job done.

Ultra Super Easy Way = Bring to gunsmith. Collect. :D

There will be no problem if you are present with the chap doing your barrel, but it concerns me that he does not know how to remove the barrel in the first place (no offence intended there). If he does then let him take it apart, again in your presence its not an issue.

If he does not know how to then (and again no offence intended) bring it to someone that can legally hold the firearm, do the work and has the necessary tools to make sure the rifle goes back together as it came apart.

thats the guy he wants just the barrel

You sure its the same guy? I took my A-bolt out of the stock, took off the trigger mech and scope mounts and that was enough.
I didn't have to seperate the barrel from the receiver.

How would the barrel spin in the CNC Lathe with the receiver still attached?

    Does he use a CNC?
A standard Lathe will thread simple enough.

I have had 2 rifles threaded in front of me, neither were taken out of their actions.
    I just de-stocked and de-scoped.

Don't know, thats why i'm asking.

    I know.

Okay, but it still hasn't answered my question. I have never seen it done with the receiver still attached.

Well it is easier to turn a thread on a lathe on a barrel on its own, however there is a reason your local custom guy has a specialist lathe with a few modifications to accept actions still attached to barrels.

Generally a retro thread job only requires the stock and scope off.
Did I not post pics of my .308 in a lathe ?

I have a new netbook since then and I have not transferred all my pics across.
I'm nearly sure I have a pic of my rifle in the lathe.

Give me a few mins :D

That looks like the barrel only Tack. Besides would the barrel not spin "truer" if out of the action raher than in it. Or is there aome sort of "clamp" that i haven't seen that holds the receiver, and how does it work as each receiver/action is different to others?

I only ask as every barrel i've seen being crowned, threaded, etc are on their own as in no action/receiver attached during process.

Do I have to go looking for more pics?
The barrel was inserted from the opposite side of the lathe.

It took me 1/2 hour to find that one!

Clamp the chuck around the action, it slides in from the back of the chuck.

Use a soft material to stop the chuck jaws biting the action

N'ah, I could not be ars*d posting more pics!

Moral of the story is barrel stays on, unless a new barrel where the threading can be done pre barrelling

It was hard to do on my .308 as she is only 20" where the 26" .223 barrel gave more options for machining

Once a week on average I watch a thread job, or re-barrel ;)
