Ah no we know we'd have enough water, but we put on our dishwasher at night time and wouldn't want to put it on if the pressure was very low or if the water was going off that's why we wanted to know.
Turns out we'd a burst pipe at the side of the house, it's temporarily fixed til tomorrow

Our water came back this morning. But the water tank doesn't seem to be filling back up.

We have cold running water in the kitchen no problem. But obviously without any water in the water tank we can't shower, have heating on or get any hot water at all.

Is this a sign of a burst pipe somewhere in the house/leading to the house?

Or is this normal and the water tank will refill slowly as the day goes on?

Your heating shouldn't be effected? I'd have thought...

Maybe the line is frozen somewhere between the kitchen and the attic?

The water tank must have refilled over the last few hours cos we have hot water again.

Would the heating not work off the water that comes from the water tank?

I'm no expert but my vague understanding as follow. I expect to be corrected.

Mains comes into you kitchen tap, then fills the attic tank. This then feeds everything else. All the other cold taps, washing machine, shower, bath etc. It also feeds the hot water cylinder which in turn feeds all the hot water taps.

The heating system, boiler, radiators, is a separate loop. Theres a few different types. But in general it doesn't need a constant feed from the attic, it only needs to be topped up maybe once a year. If its more than that there may be a leak in it. There should be a valve to stop this loop flowing back into the attic tank. This loop may also have an inhibitor added to water to prevent corrosion. So hence why its a separate loop to the other one.

So if this makes sense, it means that the water being off shouldn't effect your heating loop. However, if you have a leak, or a problem with the boiler it may need constant feed to keep the pressure up, in which case in needs attention from a plumber/heating engineer etc.

we are in gardiner street and still no water! disruption all week, no water when coming back from work and when leaving in the morning! we have a pile of dishes, cannot use the toilets, have to shower at work. Dublin city council website states "There is no need for people to fill baths or store large quantities of water – water tanks in every home or business will have sufficient quantity to cover the amount of water needed when water will be restricted."

    that s absolutely not true!!!

You're right. Stuck here as well. Having running cold water, but the tank seems to take an age to refill. No hot water. Can't shower or flush toilet.
