Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

he installed Windows to the external drive? ouch! Now, did it just 'format' the drive, or did he actually install Windows on it?

If he managed to install Windows on the drive, you may be out of luck. while you can use some tools like photorec, recuva, there's some other free ones too, it's likely you will not recover anything without the help of either highly sophisticated (and highly expensive) software, or by using a professional data recovery service. And even then, what is recovered may just be a jumble of incomprehensible files.

If the drive was just formatted (quick format), only a small amount of information is actually erased to make the files effectively invisible, and the space available for writing on.

Advise you to not write anything new and run some of the tools above. I rarely have to do any sort of file recovery myself, so somebody here may have a better software recommendation.

Now, go slap hubby on the wrist, and tell him to unplug sh!t when installing Windows :D

...... tools like photorec, recuva ..

Recuva would be a good on to start with alright and it's pretty straightforward to use. If the drive was fully formatted, it would have taken a very long time compared to the usual quick format. Your husband might remember whether this was the case. Some data will will almost certainly have been overwritten though with the Windows installation.
