    Hi has anybody had a problem with broken gutters and brackets because of the snow? Will insurance pay?

    Several neighbours have that problem. Yes, I'd say that would come into the same category as storm damage to roof tiles - you should be able to claim on buildings insurance but do contact them as you'll probably need 3 quotes.

    Some insurers are making noises to the effect that snow damage is not a stated insured peril. They are trying to argue that the weight from accumulation on a roof is not storm damage (the nearest defined peril)

    However, most household insurance policies are on an 'accidental damage' basis and there can be no trying to duck of of settling claims with that wording.

    However, watch out for next year. If insurers are reluctantly (and rightly) forced to pay for these claims, they will more than likely put a specific exclusion or high excess on the policy at next renewal.
