Don't have the book with me, could ya type it out? :D

Sub in the value for x.

So, you'll end up with 2 over 1/2 + 1 for the first fraction. (Sorry, don't know how to do fractions on here.)

  • Registered Users Posts: 39 aarong1169

    yeah it says:

    Evaluate 2/x+1 + 3/x+4 when x=1/2

yeah i did that...i checked the answer on the back of the book but i cant get it...the answer is 2

Just sub in for x, and add them on the calculator. You'll get 2 alright.

    2/x+1 + 3/x+4

    = 2/ 3/2 + 3/ 9/2
    =2x 2/3 + 3x 2/9
    =4/3 + 6/9
    =4/3 + 2/3
    = 6/3
    = 2
    There ya go :P

AFAIK, Calculator can't handle dividing fractions, could be wrong though
also, its only the answer, only worth 3 marks :P

    There's no dividing?

No no, Like when you do a fraction over a fraction it can't handle it, well mine can't anyway xD

What calculator do you have? Mine can handle that - I know what you mean now. Though I just had it as 1.5 instead of 3/2.

    Ah right.
    Ehh.... I dunno, Its ****e anyway :P

I'd recommend the Sharp EL-W531. It does everything and is pretty straightforward. They should sell them in your local Easons.

No Easons in waterford man :P

I'll be grand, I'm pretty good at doing maths in my head anyway

    Christmas Tests start tomorrow.
    With CSPE :D

i know now im really annyoin but

    Evaluate 3/x+3 + 4/2x+6 when x=1/3

could you do that if you dont mind its just i get so pissed off when io cant do it. could you also expplain if you dont mind. sorry

  • Registered Users Posts: 39 aarong1169

    oh nd d answer is 1 1/2

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 347 ✭✭Just Contribute

Alright. It might be hard to understand here, but:

    -Sub in 1/3 for x.
-That will give you 3 over 1 and a third + 3 over 6 and two thirds.
-Add that as you would a normal equation, or put it into the calculator.
    -You'll end up with 1.5.

Sorry I can't lay it out properly and all that.

Oh, and you're not annoying. We all need help at times. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like -- that's how you learn.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭TehFionnster

Okay, I'll do the answer first.

    let x = 1/3

    3/x+3 + 4/2x+6

    3/ 10/3 + 4/ 2(1/3)+6
    3/ 10/3 + 4/ 2/3+6
    3/10/3 + 4/ 20/3
    3/10 x3 + 3/20 x4
    9/10 + 12/20
    9/10 + 6/10
    15/10
    1 1/2
    ======
    I'll explain in a sec.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭TehFionnster

Actually, Just Contribute can explain :P
Seeing as he already started :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 347 ✭✭Just Contribute

Eh, I don't really know what there is to explain.

You sub-in the given value for x. Then you proceed to add like you normally would, by finding the lowest common denominator and work that out. Cancel the fraction down if possible.

I don't know what else to say. Is there anything in particular you don't get about it?

yeah eh i dnt get how he got the x3 and x4 on the fourth line down..

    3/10 x3 + 3/20 x4

im here tearin my hair out lyk **** sake

boiz i really apprecioate ye tryin to help me wi dis now..:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 374 ✭✭TehFionnster

You see, Its well enough Impossible(without a calculator) to divide fractions.
So instead you turn the fraction upside down and multiply

    ie. 3/ 10/2

    that becomes : 2/10 x3
    = 6/10
    = 3/5

Sorry if its a bad explanation.

I know this is a very, very late reply but in case someone asks this again I think it's important to clarify on TehFionnster answer earlier as it goes through some very important maths concepts which will always come in handy later.
(I did this in word first and pasted. It changed a lot and didn't put in the lines between fractions so please print out and draw in the lines in the fractions. Alternatively I can send anyone the pdf of this if they give me their email)

    Text and Tests 2 Section 1A Q.50

    Evaluate 3/x+3 + 4/2x+6 when x=1/3

    = 3............. 4
    1/3+3 + 2(1/3) + 6

    = 3......... .....4
    10/3 + 2(1/3) + 6 Remember- brackets first

    = 3....... .....4
    10/3 + 2/3 + 6

    = 3..........4
    10/3 + 20/3

    Now remember –
Any fraction eg 4/6 means the number is 4 divided by 6 – so it’s smaller than the number 1. So the bigger the bottom number the further down it exists in that space between 1 and 0 .
****Anyway – to divide by a fraction you turn the fraction upside down and multiply because to divide is the opposite of to multiply
    eg 10X10 =100.
    100 ÷ 10 = 10
    if the fraction is 100/10 = 100 ÷ 10 OR 100 X 1/10 = 10

    all fun and games
    SO, BACK TO
    .. 3.........4
10/3 + 20/3 I'll show them next on two separate lines

    3.....= 3 ÷ 10..=...3 ÷ 10 WHICH ALSO EQUALS 3 X 3 = 9/10
    10/3....... . 3........1.... .3................................. 1 10

    4.....= 4 ÷ 20 = 4 ÷ 20 WHICH ALSO EQUALS 4 X 3 = 12 = 6/10
    20/3....... . 3... .1......3.................................1...20...20

    THEREFORE
    9/10 + 6/10 = 15/10 = 1 1/2
