maybe I'm out of touch can you explain how it reduces ping times to a server for gaming?

I would have thought if anything it would increase ping times?

It depends on the game I suppose but for example, if I use an openVPN Netherlands connection to world of warcraft I get roughly around 60ms steady. If I use the same vpn which lands in the UK I get 30ms or under.
On UPC, typically, it averages around 200ms but they've improved it an awful lot recently due to the gaming community kicking up a fuss not just in Ireland but Europe wide so in fairness I no longer use VPN for Wow any more.

For other games hosted in the US, I use the US vpn which drastically cuts my ping times and the likes of the OnLive gaming setup is almost perfect - whereas at the moment if playing direct from Ireland, there's considerable and noticeable latency/lag effecting your gameplay.
For the likes of PlanetSide I used to still play not so long ago (old MMOFPS game, still going but full of hackers these days) my ping was so good when using the US VPN that I was constantly called a cheat, it made that much of a difference :)

Anyone else signed up to the 100Mb service?

Still sitting on the fence here...

Personally, I think you'd be mad to upgrade to something like this. It's a brand new service, it's too expensive and if you have a little patience, your existing service will eventually be upgraded with minimum or no extra cost.

I think the past is no indication of what will happen again in the future. They have a good array of products and price points now. If they bump up the 30Mb service for free, that will reduce the temptation for some to move to the 100Mb product. I can see the packages staying as they are.

Maybe. Maybe they'll offer a 50mb package as well? Eventually, 30 mb will be the lowest one as the speed increases. So over time, I would imagine there will be free upgrades.
On saying all of that, UPC don't really have any real competition in terms of price and broadband service (on paper at least)

I doubt it mainly because you have to get a new modem to receive the 100mb.

Although depending on how long you can wait, I'm sure they will be replacing modems for free in future. Same as with the stb etc.

the current modem SA 2203 and the current modem/router EPC2425 are both certified EuroDOCSIS2.0 which is rated up to 55mbps down and 30mbps up so UPC could release a new 50mbps product without having to swap out existing modems & routers.

it seems like a logical (and fair) move given that they have already done this in all the other areas where they have launched the 100/120mbps services.

given that they have recently put some people on a 25mbps package (based on posts here, no docs/sites to back it up) it seems logical that they will split it all up so it is something along the lines of 8mbps, 15mbps, 25mbps, 50mbps, 100mbps.

50mbps/5mbps would suit me fine tbh as long as the AUP is raised, but that doesn't mean i don't still WANT the 100mbps.

EDIT: LOL, just read this, so maybe not. :(

    very disappointing.

    I was thinking more like 5, 10, 15, 30, 50, 100.
A new product to fill the gap between 30 and 100.
But if they didn't tell SR, when they were telling them about the upgrades then I doubt they've planned that far ahead yet.

i was thinking the same thing. very disappointing. :(

still not decided if i can resist the upgrade to 100mbps or not when it finally becomes available.

    Installed today:

So far.. So fast. Upload can be up to 9Mb but down is generally between late 80's and 105Mb

Downloaded some stuff from Microsoft and it peaked at about 4.8MB per second - note large B! Now.. where is my Rapidshare logon.

Lads from Integrated Communications installed - were very helpful and ran a new cable down side of house and around to my office.

Any questions I am happy to answer.

They supply you with the dongle for wireless and to download the drivers its Here. They had no disc with the dongle. Don't know if it was just where I am but they took over an hour to install. I have phone and tv with upc. There was an issue with the line. Don't know what the €80 charge is for as if it was not for the line fault could have done it myself. They measure the speed both wired and wireless and write this on your receipt. My laptop was not getting the wireless speeds and I thought my card was n enabled seemingly not as not getting the speeds on this? These speeds average for wireless?

Now trying to figure out how to confugure the modem for torrents but thats for another forum. Still a lot of work to be done as have to run cable to attic they would not do that for me:(

They are also rebranding there packages The upc difference launching on 4th jan 2011...... Fibre freedom starter, Fibre freedom sport, fibre freedom rapid and fibre freedom ultimate

Their new packages/pricing structure is pretty crap when you compare it to the other countries where they operate. There are some big price differences between the countries and only 2 are more expensive than Ireland (Belgium and Switzerland).

I guess the other telecoms operators need to get there asses in gear to compete with them.

    More expensive:

What did they give you the dongle for ? was it for your desktop or laptop because it wasnt getting the speeds? The dongle I think should be an 'N' receiver....

Did some checking up before I ordered this. My Desktop does not have an N card so I asked for the Dongle. The speed I posted was a wired one to my laptop also speed for wireless was laptop, less dongle. Not sure if card in laptop is N enabled, posted on another forum and was told it was.

Got into the control panel and now configuring this. Anyone who has this 100mb with the Thomson modem anything to change other than password? Looking at portfoward now and will try to configure this top open port.

those are actually N wireless speeds (well, faster than G wireless speeds), they just aren't very good N wireless speeds.

most wireless G equipment will average between about 20mbps and 30mbps sustained transfer speeds on a good day so you're definitely on wireless N. the first thing to check is your wireless channel with inSSIDer to make sure you're on the least crowded part of the wireless spectrum as wireless N will be using more of the 2.4ghz bandwidth to get the higher speeds so you'll want to make sure as much of that is as clear as possible.

And the latest word is,The 100 meg will be available in Limerick and Cork around the last week of January and then in early February whatever BB speed you are on will be doubled (ie 30 meg to 60 meg) and that is about the end of UPC's BB plan for next year.
The 100meg is being installed and tested in Limerick since last week, although in one case I know about, the installer took three days to get it right and before the job is signed off,he does a speedtest in front of you and then you sign it off.
Will be nice if it happens.

any confirmation on this or is it rumour mill type stuff?

i'm just thinking it would make more sense for them to offer a 50mbps/5mbps service as they could do that without upgrading modems or routers (afaik) as the current gen models (epc2203 & epc2425) are only EuroDOCSISv2 certified so should top out at a max. of 55mbps on the downstream.

assuming this info is correct (from wikipedia) they would have to replace all the 30mbps customers modems & routers to do the upgrades.

not doubting you, just a curious little geek by nature. :)

No hard evidence for it,I'm afraid, but did hear it from two separate people within the company and one of those was spot on about when the 100 meg was to be introduced. Was also told the reason why the speeds were being doubled was to bring us more in line with the European subsideries.....and that is all I know. Will it happen, all I can say is,we all know what UPC are like:)

In fairness here in the Netherlands is 47.50 / month for the 30 meg connection (Including the TV Only charge)

In Ireland its 49.75 / month, is that correct ?

I call BS, XP/Vista could handle 100Mb no problem, it depends on your NIC card.

Just FYI to get full speed you will need wireless N NICs on ALL your devices. If one device is at wireless g that that will slow it down for EVERY device on the wireless network.

to get full speed you'll need a wired connection, you won't get the full 100mbps from the wireless N on the router they provide.

the most i've seen anyone get wirelessly on any speed test with the UPC 100mbps is in the </> 80mbps region.

if you're looking to increase the speeds on your wireless N network then this article has some interesting and useful tips.

    http://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1395549

#1 Confirm that You're Using New Adapters
#2 Verify that Hardware is from the Same Manufacturer
#3 Use WPA2 with AES Encryption Only
#4 Change Default Channel-width for High Speeds
#5 Disconnect Wireless G Clients for Best N Performance
#6 Use Only 40MHz-wide Channels with Strong Signals
    #7 Check for interference

i'm not sure if (#6) channel bonding is supported on the new router or not, but if it is you'd probably be wise not to use it if you have neighbours or they might well be round with flaming torches and pitchforks to run you out of town for killing all the other wifi networks in your street. :D

Regarding Windows 7, I wouldn't be surprised if the wireless networking stack in Vista/Windows 7 has better performance then that in XP. After all it has several years more work on it.

As a result you might see higher throughput in 802.11n on Vista/7 then you do in XP. Anyways as other people have said the only guarantee to get 100mb/s is to use wired Ethernet.

The stack would want to be of very high quality, Microsoft initially "borrowed" the entire TCP/IP network stack from the BSD people a while back. Unix brought decent networking
to Windows and almost every OS that has the concept of network sockets. 100 meg broadband is pretty impressive for a home user. Very impressive in this backward kip of a country.
