It’s that time of the year again – exams are approaching and the use of the Wireless Network is peaking:

There are a number of steps you can take to improve the situation for both yourself and your fellow students:

High usage is resulting in occasional depletion (running out of) IP addresses in the Main Library, Health Sciences & Merville residences in particular but occasional in other buildings.

    To help conserve IP addresses:

If your not using the network disable the wireless adaptor – particularly smart phones

Register and use the wired network

Remember to disable your wireless adaptor when using the wired
network so as not to use a wireless IP address as well as the wired one.

    Configure eduroam.

Ensure that the eduroam profile is preferred over WaveLAN network

For windows Vista / 7 start, Network and Sharing Centre, Manage Wireless Networks, Move Up / Down as necessary.

Check power saving settings in Windows Vista / 7:

Start, Power Options, Change Plan settings, Change Advanced Power Settings, Wireless adaptor settings, Power Saving Mode – set to maximum performance – need to be repeated for all power plans.
