Seems like another institutional cover up to me, check this out:

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/i-wanted-to-highlight-dangers-of-drug-use-2466558.html

I don't get this "out of respect for his memory" thing, probably a lot of his mates were on it too, and spending so much €€ on coke, his closest friends would have seen clues, for sure.

The guy was a fool, and all the folks that built him up are now extremely embarrassed, especially those who produced the excessive media coverage, pages and pages of it about the death of "a fine man". A role model, what a joke! All us normal citizens try out best to keep on the straight and narrow- we're the ones that need respect, not this idiot!

His family will be ashamed of him and his memory, I would be if I were them.

    ...................................................

Drink driving deaths- thats another subject we don't get the right info broadcast, out of respect for the memory I guess. Every weekend there are single vehicle accidents and people killed who "lost control" of their vehicle, another cover-up... they should publish the true statistics and make that a warning to all of us AND DO A SERIOUS ANTI-DRINK DRIVING CAMPAIGN

("Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has announced that he will not stand for election in the 2011 General Election", hope his successor has a better go at this)..

So how do I know Gerry Ryan had let cocaine take over his life? Because he offered it to me at his own Christmas party
Since he spoke out about his friend’s cocaine habit, Gareth O’Callaghan has been mocked and vilified. Now he turns the tables – and poses very awkward questions for RTÉ...

Marian Finucane, told of how she now feels like a ‘mug’ after taking to heart one of Gerry’s regular anti-drug rants. ‘I remember hearing him doing a big long piece on his show saying:
“You cannot mix alcohol and cocaine.” Whether one is a mug or not, I absolutely took him seriously on that,’ she said.

    Make up your mind Gareth.

    From the Daily Fail:
The year was 2003, the venue an exclusive suite in the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin.

The event was the Gerry Ryan Show’s annual Christmas party. And the moment that has forever remained frozen in Gareth O’Callaghan’s mind was the one when the host himself sauntered over and made his young protégé a staggering offer.

‘Gerry said to me: “Have you ever tried cocaine?”'

And the star wasn’t simply making a curious journalistic inquiry: he wanted to know if Gareth was interested in joining him for a snort.
Gareth was horrified, and he let it show. ‘I told him I hadn’t tried it. I had no desire to take it at all.’

But Gerry wasn’t finished. ‘He looked at me square in the eyes,’ recalls Gareth, ‘and said: “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.”’

    From the Sindo:
Speaking about the time Mr Ryan urged him to try cocaine he said: "Gerry asked me once if I had ever taken drugs. He had a great knack at sort of throwing a grenade into a conversation, and make it sound as normal as could be.
"It was after a segment he was doing on a cocaine bust that had been in the news and we were talking about it afterwards in the RTE canteen and I was saying how shocked I was by it," explained Mr O'Callaghan.
"He said, 'Have you ever taken drugs, Gareth?' And I said, 'No way, never'. He looked at me with sort of disbelief -- as if he thought I was pulling his leg, but I was adamant I would never touch them.
"That's when he said, 'Don't knock it 'til you try it,' and gave me this look with a glint in his eye. I can still remember it. I took it as an invitation. I shuddered. I knew he was doing it at that stage."

So who are these 3 or 4 RTE presenters that we hear on radio and see on TV that are taking cocaine????

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,834 ✭✭✭Sonnenblumen

Well whatabout the celeb Radio presenter who for a long time together with his wife enjoyed taking cocaine. Anyway eventually the wife called time on the habit hubbie was not as determined as the wife to stop. Eventually the ultimatum was offered to the hubbie, stop taking or else! He was kicked out. Alone and broken hearted, he continued enjoying his habit until it too eventually took him.

Note: this post has nothing to do with any person living or dead and any potential similarity with real or actual events is purely a coincidence.

This whole 'supporting criminals' schtick is a bit much IMHO. Does Kevin Myers seriously expect us to believe he NEVER looked at porn, ever, an industry which has a huge criminal element involving human trafficking etc, an industry very similar to the illegal drug industry. FARC my arse.

The fundamental issue I have with this whole sorry saga is that Mr Ryan said one thing and did the very opposite and pontificated strongly on the matter.
He was an utter hypocritic plain and simple and because of his very powerful position he was able to influence the opinions of countless others regarding the use of illegal drugs.

Many RTE personalities have been strangely quiet, particularly Dave Fanning, one of the few who didn't trumpet his private life much except his U2 affair.

The sooner ALL drugs are accepted by society for what they are, and like other mind altering substances can have serious negative consequences. All drug use should be a health issue alone and treated as such, until then, well expect the same old sh]te.

any unusual death requires an inquest when the decesied dies unexpectedly, its the law of the land im afraid. and you are no different from anyone else, except in circumstances where a person is late in years and the deat is accepted as being of natural causes, even so i believe if the person has not seen their GP within a month a post mortim ie required possibly not an inquest if there are no abnormalities.

Tubs and Pat Kenny last week said they hadn't a clue of Gerrys habit, didn't they? Where are these lads living, Middle earth?

I live in a small town down the coutry and i heard 6 years ago.
I'd say theres a few RTE employees worrying this evening after what was reported on the news.

    Yeah, Expose them all.

The mans dead and he died in sad and pathethic circumstances and it is tragic, for him and his family. But he was a big part of this elite Dublin social scene where cocaine use is obviuosly rife. The man was a complete and utter phony moralizing on the radio and calling drug dealers scumbags whilst snorting cocaine in lilles or some other dreadful celebrtiy haunt. The fact that he was supposedly under stress just goes to show how week an incapable people like this are when faced with real life issues. Ho dare RTE expect a well known Dublin celebrity to show up at all and on time to his overpaid job.

Sums it up really. I find it really pathetic that people are using 'ah he was so stressed' as an excuse. A lot of people have a lot more pressure and responsibility without the huge salary and yearly free 2 week stays in the Fitzpatrick Manhattan and they aren't all off their t*ts on coke. Complete hypocrite, IMO.

Hat tip to GSF in the Radio forum for news of this development:
Gardaí plan to speak to the journalists and editor of the Sunday Independent after reports in the newspaper that corrupt gardaí have "protected rich and public figures with drug habits, including Gerry Ryan".
    Full article here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

Pretty sad that Gay Byrne wants the whole thing swept under the rug.

I wonder if he'd feel that way if Gerry died in a car crash.

That's the first thing I said when I was watching that person a couple of weeks back BEFORE the Ryan inquest... I was extremely pissed off that there was kids on the show that day.

One of the papers is carrying the headline

    ''Cops will hunt Gerrys dealer''

Here we go Katy French mark two. Seems its only important to pursue drug dealers when its someone ''important'' that dies

It is all a bit hilarious how the Gardaí seem to only give a **** about drug dealers when it is someone "important" that decided to kill themselves taking that ****.

Eh...do you not think it's the media and the posters on this sad thread who are giving the **** and climbing on bandwagons? The Gardai are doing their jobs, just like they have always done.

I remember a documentary about cocaine use in Ireland on RTE a few years ago.
They were tested the surfaces in toilets of pubs and clubs for traces of cocaine. When they tested the RTE toilets in Donnybrook they all turned up positive for coke.
