    Hi there!

I'm going to do a degree in science next year. Doing the open days now but having trouble deciding where to study! Been told DIT is more recognizable and better job opportunities. Although been told UCD has the best labs!

If anyone who studied science could give me some useful advise, it would be much appreciated!

    Cheers!

Only a DIT student would ever have said that. UCD is a far more 'senior' college than DIT, and has the best facilities in the country.
    (I went to neither btw)

Might also look into Trinity. Like UCD it has great facilities. I study in Trinity but I don't do pure Science... I'm studying engineering so I am down in the science corner of the college.
At the end of the day go to the open days and just pick the college that feels right to you. I was told at the start of the year that UCD had a better engineering building but during the open day I just felt uncomfortable in the building and then on the other hand when I went to Trinity It felt right to me!
    Hope this helps!

What about NUIM? I did my degree there followed by a Masters in UCD and would definitely recommend Maynooth out of the two! First class facilities and great lecturers!

I'd avoid trinity going by what i've heard....

DCU is good for teaching - good labs/lecturers for the most part, but social-wise it's completely isolated and crap.

NUIG, while it may not have the best looking science building, or the best equipment, the lecturers are very good, and nice, and the teaching standard is pretty good. Also you will not get a better social life anywhere else.

Speaking as someone who transferred from DCU to NUIG :)

What area of science are you interested in OP? I know you mean a general science degree, but what subjects are you the most interested in, possibly for specialising in?

Don't be put off DIT based on what people are saying. I study physics there and it's pretty good. Don't worry about job offers regarding "prestige" or reputation of the place. A degree is a degree, it all comes down to how hard you are willing to work for it.
My lecturers are spot on, small class sizes and the people there are generally sound. Every university/college is gonna have good and bad points so like someone said above, just go with what feels right to you.

Thanks for all your posts folks, completely forgot I started this post. I got Biomedical Science in DIT, and I'm going into 1st year in Sept.

After plenty of research DIT's (and CIT & UCC) Biomed degree is the only degree in Dublin that is accredited by the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science, which means I'll be able to work in pathology labs, and not just research unlike Trinity's and UCD's which are NOT accredited by AMLS.

Thanks again for all the info!!

Hi,I'm a biomedical science student who'll be going into 2nd year come September. You're right about it being accredited by the AMLS and this course allows you to work abroad in places like the UK and Canada. The labs in Kevin street are brand new(opened last year :) ) but don't worry about what's new and what's ancient. It's about the course and this is a good course. When I first got it,I was dissapointed I didn't get general science in TCD but after i started going to the lectures, etc. I learnt that it's better than that course as it's one of the few courses that actually allows you to work in a lab!!It's to do with the work placement you get in 3rd in a hospital :)
