Finally getting snow in the west are we, or was it just Clare and Cork left out in the big freeze.:P Really hoping for a nice scattering of snow now, if only for a small few days :)
So from reading MT's posts would I be right in saying that the snow wont fall till Friday? Also, does anyone know where it'll hit heaviest?

I think it was mostly Clare and Cork that got left out, we got some here at the beginning that hung around.

Should be some snow in North and North West Thursday as front arrives.

I suspect - but be aware of my extreme bias and wishful thinking - that the entire West of the Shannon could become cut off by a wall of snow from the rest of the country, in a way not seen since the 1600's when there were no land crossings over the Shannon. Well we should see some white stuff anyway. ;)

A low from polar regions ok... But she used the magic 'polar low' phrase. Are they the same??

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,431 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

Its not a polar low in the sense people talk about here. True polar lows are nowcast events, they cannot be forecast days ahead, lets not loose the run of ourselves here.

    No.

    From ..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_low
Polar lows are very difficult to forecast and a nowcasting approach is often used, with the systems being advected with the mid-tropospheric flow

Its a low, originating in polar regions she is forecasting, a very different beast to a polar low.
