I'm moving this to the main shooting forum as it will get more responses. :)

In relation to the gift my family tries the same thing for me each year the only benefit is both my Father and myself shoot so he knows what i'd like or need. I know some do not like to give gift vouchers, but honestly they are the best and safest way to give any shooter what he/she wants or needs.

Trying to buy something yourself will be a headache. Your husband will probably have a certain type of gear that he likes to use so i'd recommend gift vouchers from a local firearms dealer.

If it's just books though... well, that's safe enough because you might get a recommendation for something he's not heard of but would find enjoyable or useful. But you would have to be specific as to whether he was more into hunting or into target shooting. Does he shoot in competitions? Does he hunt rabbits or deer or pheasant? Does he use a rifle or a shotgun or a pistol? And so on.

its books for reading up on types of guns, he has a semi auto shotgun, rifle, think then up and over too. i know it 4 altogether.

he does clay shooting in shooting range. goes out for rabbits too. and also has been down to tullamore to shooting range for target shooting.

he has all the gear, sights, holders, hat, coats etc and doesnt want a voucher and just said if u could get me some books on guns/rifles/target shooting, think he like to know about working out distance on sights. tryed easons no books on shooting/hunting .......

so kinda lost maybe a a year subscription for the 2 magazine he always gets, shooting sports and sport shooting in easons?

Ah, you would have the deepest sympathies of my own good lady wife on that one.
I've never seen that look of absolute boredom descend so quickly as when I talk about the great and glorious sport of shooting, in all it's varied and multifarious forms of brilliance, and all the technical wizardry and skillset involved.........:D
how would i get info on competitions?

Here is about as good a place as any TBH.

If he's in a target shooting club, he may hear that way - but many of us rely of the announcements here and on the various club/organisation calenders online. Here's a couple, which try to cover the majority of the various competitions and disciplines out there:

    Rathdrum RPC Calendar

    NASRPC Combined Calendar

    NTSA Shooting Calendar

By all means, not every competition will listed on these, but a good many (if not all) are. But there's also the section on the Target Shooting subforum here, which covers most competitions when they are announced.

To answer your OP, unless you know of a specific item which he is looking for or can ask him specifically what would he like, I'd say the best thing to do is to give a voucher or agree to buy him something once he's picked it out himself.

Fairplay to you for thinking of getting him something which he'll enjoy.

It's taken me a while now, but my family now just ask me what I'd like - or I go and get it and they "reimburse" me - not very cosy, but it's a great way of making sure I get the kit I had my mind set on and they get to buy me a pressie I'll really get use out of and appreciate. This has worked well for my birthday and is now providing books etc for Christmas! So I'm happy!:D:D

BTW Eason's and all other bookshops I've been to in Dublin have a pretty piss-poor selection of books on Shooting and Hunting - on Target Shooting, forget it: Nothing!

Amazon seems to have a good selection, so maybe a voucher for there may be a good bet?

Amazon are good - so are BookDepository.co.uk (and they're usually up to a third cheaper than the same book on amazon, I find). You could always get a catalog and leave a note in it to say "pick something" and let him spend xmas day picking his xmas gift... (though you might find this gets expensive!)

Sounds like he is trying to save you money by asking for magazines etc.
    http://www.peterson.ie/brands/leatherman/charge-alx.html

If he is into shooting a leatherman is a really handy piece of kit, it can bre worn on his belt so he can bring it every where with him

    just an idea ;)

he's got a leatherman, he actually has a lot of stuff and loves going out shooting rabbits, then loves clay shooting, but i think nearly he just loves, taking them outta safe, cleaning and looking at them and explaining them too me, i just nod and smile while on laptop of course.

can anyone recommend a good book that he would read, like i says he has a semi auto shotgun, rifle think its tikka 223, under and over shotgun and something else, has a number on it browning something.....

would there be a book about browning types of guns?

went on BookDepository.co.uk, but i wouldnt have a clue which one, so if someone could say get blah blah blah i would be grateful, dont think he mind what it is about just the fact i went to the effort and got it.

have bought him loads of fishing stuff over the years but that was easy use to fish myself but shooting not a change, even thought he said the small gun would be nice and light for me, the weight of it was unreal.... haha am a woman

    Try this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/History-Browning-Firearms-Fortifications-Around/dp/159228910X

    Or for some sheer gunporn:

    http://www.amazon.com/Guns-Illustrated-2011-Latest-Prices/dp/1440213925/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1292253064&sr=1-3

Anything by Janes is usually fun to browse through too:
    http://www.amazon.com/Janes-Guns-Recognition-Guide-5e/dp/0061374083/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1292253127&sr=1-3

    Or perhaps this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Encyclopedia-Rifles-Machine-Guns/dp/B0041T4R00/ref=sr_1_15?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1292253188&sr=1-15

These are nicely generalist and are kinda "coffee-table books" for the firearms enthusiast, but I also find them fun to read and see what lovely things are out there to add to my shopping list (i wish):D

Hey, funnygirl2009, he may have a Leatherman, but does he have one of these babies?

    LeathermanMUTUtilityTool.jpg

It can be ordered online from here (they're very good to deal with BTW): http://www.heinnie.com/Pocket-Tools/Leatherman-Multi-Tools/Leatherman-Multi-tools-MUT-Utility/p-94-222-6118/
The Leatherman MUT is the first multi-tool that functions as both a tactical and practical tool for military, LE, or civilian shooters. The MUT features multiple areas on the tool threaded for cleaning rods and brushes and all the screwdriver bits are sized for standard military and civilian sighting adjustment work. Also built into the design of the tool is the flexibility to replace the most commonly used parts on the spot, using a simple Torx #8, keeping down-time to a minimum. With all this, a MOLLE sheath and scope adjustment wrench included, the Leatherman MUT may very well be the most efficient and useful piece in your kit.

420HC Stainless Steel Clip Point Combo Straight/Serrated Knife
    Needlenose and Regular Pliers
    154CM Replaceable Wire Cutters
    154CM Replaceable Hard-wire Cutters
    Stranded Wire Cutters
    Saw
    Hammer
    Replaceable Cutting Hook
    Bolt Override Tool
    Replaceable Firearm Disassembly Punch
    Replaceable Carbon Scraper
    Cleaning Rod/Brush Adapters
    Carabiner Clip
    Bottle Opener
    Large Bit Driver
    Electrical Crimper
INCLUDED BITS: Phillips #1-2 and 3/16, Phillips #2 and 1/4 Screwdriver, Torx #15 and Hex 7/64
Now that is what I call a multi-tool!

    some ideas in the forum

    http://www.****************/forumdisplay.php?f=37

i know my brother bought me the Robert Bucknell book "foxing with lamp and rifle" supposed to be a very good book and also the DVD about Foxing by the same man

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,271 ✭✭✭✭johngalway

    If he shoots foxes,

"Foxing with lamp and rifle" Robert Bucknell.

    General interest sporting rifle book,

    "The Sporting Rifle" Robin Marshall-Ball.

Forget the magazines, he'll learn more on shooting forums than reading mags and it'll cost the two of ye a lot less (that may not prove strictly true :pac: ).

There are probably other good books that I've forgotten about or just don't know of.
