    Hi guys,
You are probably sick to death of questions like these but here goes :)
I am looking to purchase an incar gps unit as a present, most likely a garmin or a tomtom device. Key features i am looking for are:

    - Good intuitive user interface and general usability.

    - Detailed and accurate maps for Ireland ( i heard garmin is better in this respect than tomtom)

    - Traffic updates (TMC i think its called, when the updates are transmitted over FM band. It should be operational in Dublin by now from what Ive read).

    - Lane guidance.

    - Speed limit and speed camera warnings (again, heard garmin is pretty good with their Cyclops camera database)

    - Bluetooth hands-free functionality

    - Wide screen

My budget is around 150€, can stretch it a bit for the right device.
The one I'm leaning towards is Garmin nuvi 1340T which has everything listed above except for bluetooth functionality.
Are there better devices out there that tick those boxes?

    Thanks in advance.

You are right sticking with Garmin or TomTom

You can view Garmin devices here.
    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134

    and TomTom devices here
    http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/products/car-navigation/index.jsp

Compare between them & see what suits your needs & budget best.

    Thanks.

Am i right in assuming that RDS-TMC is functional in dublin at present?

If so, how effective is it in practice?

RDS TMC is not available in Dublin at the moment.
TomTom Live Traffic and other Live services , including Google search & weather is available & working very well.

    thanks again koolkid

P.S. Are you sure about TMC? This article says otherwise: http://www.dublincity.ie/ROADSANDTRAFFIC/TRAFFIC/Pages/TMC(TrafficMessageChannel).aspx

I read that article (or something similar) in September ,when it was supposed to be launched. I could get nothing on TMC so I emailed them. They were less than forthcoming with any information. They suggested I should get newer maps , even though I had a pre release of the latest TT maps.
I'll try it again tomorrow on a non live unit.

I have heard it works with Garmin if you have the latest maps.
    See this thread for more.

I have tested on TomTom Via, Go1000 & Go 1005.
I got no TMC reception on any of those using latest software.
