Well they are in my opinion - it's only your opinion that they're not, doesn't make it a fact. And they're contemporary. Prince and Blondie were good pop - sure, if it's a case of looking at pop throughout the decades, then yeah, I agree they wiped the floor with Take That and Beyoncé, but in terms of what's good pop now: in my opinion the best out there is the likes of the above. They're certainly miles better, I think, than X Factor/Louis Walsh type fare.

Junior Senior were more recent and still better. I'm 100% right about everything including my opinions.

I realsie this is a bit generalising but...
Is it not mainly women that go to see boy bands and buy their records. I realise some men do too but i'll bet anything the vast majority are female. Turned on the TV the other night, to my horror saw Take That were on, and a bunch of 'sreaming' women in the audience, not even girls, grown women. Same story i'll bet on x-factor. Only reason all this exists is becasue Mr Cowel and the rest are making absolute fortunes selling this vacious rubbish to women
    Whats the deal ladies ?

This is one of the reasons I prefer to date men.

WTF no it wasn't. Now you compare x-factor to the Beatles? Feckin hell.

I dunno who this rebecca ferguson person is and I'm not saying she has a bad singing voice.

But we wont still be listening to her in 40 years time hailing her as one of the most influential musical acts of her time, I can tell you that for sure.

I can hardly call the stuff coming from that show music, its so fake and manufactured they need a new word for this stuff tbh.

When Elvis, the Beatles, the Stones, first appeared they weren't considered serious music, they were considered crap that kids listened to. When I Wanna Hold Your Hand was released no-one knew the Beatles would be he most influential act of all time. While it's unlikely that a group of equal influence will surface on the X-Factor, or anywhere, that doesn't mean everyone who appears on the show is, by default, no good. Since you automatically assume everyone who appears on it is crap, you are prejudiced, you judge before you see or listen.

PEOPLE ON THE X FACTOR DON'T WRITE THEIR OWN MUSIC.

THIS MEANS THEY ARE F*CKING KARAOKE SINGERS AND WILL NEVER HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON AN ARTFORM.

Elvis didn't write his own music. Dylan didn't at the beginning.

BIG difference between those bands and x-factor ones. For one, The Beatles and Stones played and wrote their own music. I dread to think what legacy this generation will leave to music

They didn't at the start of their careers. They were covers bands first. Another example, Scott Walker was in a 'boyband' in the sixties, was a teen idol, a heart throb, and went on to create the most avant garde, experimental music of the 2000s. It's unlikely that anyone from X Factor will do the same, but not impossible. Anyway, why dread? What are the reams of mediocre rock and indie bands going to contribute? Nothing either. There has always been far more dross than quality. Those with talent and something to say will work away regardless. And, who knows, they might decide to audition for a reality tv show.

not to generalize. ...but quite often i notice a link between how good looking the male band/lead singer is and whether a girl likes the band.....in saying that i knew various girls that like a lot of music regardless of how cute members were......but not as many

Has no one realised the phrase 'good taste in music' nearly always just means 'same taste in music as me'?

I mean, I'm really not into boy bands or anything on the radio but taste in music is always just a matter of opinion.

Ah, you just gotta dig a little deeper with trad to find the good stuff.

    Planxty being a great example.
There's plenty of fantastic trad acts - obviously the Bothy Band, Planxty (can't say I'm keen on Christy moore tbh), Lunasa, Beoga, Kan, Lau, Ioscaid, Flook and lots of the stuff Sharon Shannon and her big band do... and hundreds of other bands. Trad's such a wide genre, I'm sure there's something for everyone. I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't smile and tap their feet when they hear it. If I did, I'd kill them

Oh, and women have shocking taste in music, on the whole.

Can I just point out that I love chart music...and I've got an IQ of 143...

How come only music that no normal people have ever heard of is considered good music??...If it's so great why don't more people like it??

I'm not standing up for X Factor or Simon Cowell here but I do feel that in the real world, the majority of people are into chart music..OBVIOUSLY as most people are buying that music and thats how it MAKES the charts...understanding so far???

The music the majority of you guys are into is emo/indie/dull sh/t that you like cause charts are too mainstream and you're such misfits...

    Quite sad...

I like so many female singers , the list from the last 5 decades would easly run up to about about a hundred , admittedly my own tastes and presumebly all those great artists must have had

A . reasonably good voice of sorts or in many case's exellent .

B . Have being influenced by other female ( and some male ) artists themselfs to want to become singers so the question is really void .

What in the name of christ does your IQ have to do with anything? No one said morons have bad taste in music.

Actually about 3,4 pages in people were saying there was an obvious connection between the type of music they listen to and their intelligence...as if they're so f*cking intelligent

I have most excellent taste in music..

I like a very wide variety of music..

Isn't taste a personal thing anyway?

Who can say what is good or bad taste..

    It's my taste..

Eh....so what? You want a pat on the back or something? IQ testing is by no means an exact science.
How come only music that no normal people have ever heard of is considered good music??...If it's so great why don't more people like it??
    Define "normal people."
I'm not standing up for X Factor or Simon Cowell here but I do feel that in the real world, the majority of people are into chart music..OBVIOUSLY as most people are buying that music and thats how it MAKES the charts...understanding so far???
    OHMIGODIT'SALLSOCLEARNAOW!!1!!

Obviously, chart music is popular. Hence the fact that it's in the charts. I don't think anyone failed to grasp that concept, but thank you for being considerate and patronising enough to point it out to all of us.
The music the majority of you guys are into is emo/indie/dull sh/t that you like cause charts are too mainstream and you're such misfits...

    Quite sad...
Oh sure, generalise everyone on this thread, that's the way to get a point across effectively. *slow handclap*

Bottom line - If I'm listening to music and I like what I'm hearing, I couldn't give a shít who the singer/band is, whether they're mainstream and succesful or obscure and practically unheard of.

Generally, men listen to a wider spectrum of music

Out of all my male mates, nearly all of them would listen to electronic, rock, indie, some chart, reggae, Rap, Irish trad etc

My girl mates would usually listen to pop/chart and xfactor finalists etc. Maybe 2 or 3 out of 15 would listen to the same stuff as the lads

No I think Tom is a good singer. My point is that women predominantly like the x-factor, Boyzone, Justin Bieber type music and therefore keep them in business, much more so than men do

X Factor/Justin Bieber/Boyzone fans are predominantly women, all women don't predominantly like that type of music. There is a difference...
