Picked this up from a link on the Fingal CC emergency water notice page:
    IMPORTANT NOTICE

    PERSONATION OF COUNCIL OFFICIALS

    Wednesday 15th December, 2010

Fingal County Council has been notified of incidents that have occurred in various areas of the County, where persons with criminal intent are impersonating Fingal County Council officials in order to gain access to peoples’ homes to rob their valuables.

Home owners who have reported this to the Council have stated that the perpetrators posed as officials from Water Services Department who needed access to their home to turn off the water supply.

Fingal County Council are advising home owners to be extremely vigilant if they are confronted in the above manner. Before answering your door you should take the following steps:

    · Check to to see if there is a van with the Fingal County Council logo on it (see logo above).

    · Ask for the person’s full name and ring Fingal County Council on (01) 8905000 to confirm he or she is who they say they are.

    · Council staff should also have official ID Cards

If you cannot confirm the above, the advice is not to open your door and to report the incident to the Council.

    Thanks for that.
Safe to say, my rule of thumb will be to simply not let them in.I have serious doubts that any council worker needs to get into an individual house to turn of water - they simply turn it off further up the mains pipe, why would they go from individual house to individual house.Common sense.
    But thanks again.
