    OMG! You are all crazy!

I think I'd probably die from the cold just stripping off never mind hitting the water!

Definitely. It really has become quite the social event.
The water is fine, but the sand was a nightmare last year without flip-flops. Feet were complete ice-blocks for at least 2 hours afterwards

I fancy trying this out this year (subject to weather conditions :))

Where's it generally done? Near end of the South Beach?

It is usually held at the northern end of the south beach.

I'm there definitely. Have done for years now when there where only a dozen or so doing it.

It used to be just at the north end of the south beach, but over the last 5 years the numbers attending have swelled and so it generally occurs along the entire length of the beach between the SB carpark and the mens.

Don't worry about weather the water is about 5 degrees regardless of the weather

Oh well then count me in!

I might turn up to take some photos of the blue people emerging from the sea!

Christmas swim has been cancelled for Christmas day 2010. Announced at the 5pm family mass this evening.
Also the Goal mile has been postponed 'til new year.
But I am sure a few hardy souls will venture in for a dip.

I didn't realise it was something that could be cancelled. I'll definitely be there anyway

I bet there's more than a few die hards who are stripping off right now!

They had a huge warning sign on weather last night to say people would risk hyperthermia as the water is expected to be at least -4.

Like I said... I wouldn't even get as far as the water! I shuddered when I let the cat out this morning!

??? The sea has a huge thermal mass, and therefore takes a lot longer to cool down (or heat up) than the surrounding air and normal sea temperatures in December are actually around 8-9 degrees, and the average sea temperature around Ireland in November was 10.1 degrees (from met.ie.) Anyway, sea water of normal salinity freezes at -2 so I think we can discount that one for start seeing as the sea doesn't appear to have frozen over just yet.

Inland water such as rivers and lakes will be much colder though, although again -4 would mean it was actually frozen as fresh water freezes at 0 degrees.
