Even if this is an automatic valve and the boiler auto tops up, its something that happens once every few weeks or even months if there is no leak in the system.


Check the pressure gauge near/on your boiler. Unless its readin virtually zero PSI your heating system is no where near neading a topup and thus it doesn't matter a damn if the water mains are cutoff for a time.

BTW. I am not a plumber and await further confirmation.

Thanks man,ill confirm,im pretty sure its cool to turn on though. The water corpo wouldnt tell people to keep the heating on to stop the pipes freezing if it was going to blow all the boilers.

I dunno but if it is heading the same direction as everything that has gone ahead of it today, we'll be seeing feet of snow here...

Moderate snow again in Donabate. +0.3c, but expect it to start dropping again shortly.

Had to dig about 8 inches of snow away from behind the electric gates so I could get the car into the garage. Hopefully I can get it out tomorrow. Thankfully it's 4WD, but it's a snowmobile I'll need tomorrow if www.raintoday.co.uk is anything to go by.

Would it be tied into the tank directly in the attic? or does there definitely have to be another small tank?

Usually a small tank that sits atop the main. Should be topped fully unless purposely drained.
