I'm proud to be Irish, not so proud of the state of our country though.
Now that I am at the age of being able to push on and do well, there are very little opportunities....

ya from the center of it i hardly meant from the boundry.stop nit picking
the pale goes from dalkey to dundalk and in as far as lexlip then curves slightly and takes the eastern fringes of meath.for example parts of tallaght would not be in the pale and various other dublin suburbs

"Yeah Joe, it's an absolute disgrace. The gubberment Joe, they keep taking our money and ruining our country. "I tell yeah Mary your dead right the kids..."

"... yeah, Joe it's the kids they have no respect not any more. Back in my day if you were knocked up and had the disgrace of being unmarried you learned the hard way. Same for those cheeky 5 year olds. It was much better back then. Our Society... too much has changed. We need the church back"

"dead right Mary dead right. Stay on the line there I want to get your details. After the break we'll have willie o'dea on to speak to a bunch on idiots who don't understand the concept of humour and syl fox will be telling us how much it will cost and how long it will be. How were you able to arrive at that figure?

The population of Leinster is 2.2 million and vast majority of it lies within 30km of the pale boundary. I'd say the only major urban area that doesn't qualify is Waterford City. There's 1.6 million in the greater Dublin area alone.

Kilkenny too. I don't want to be associated with that sophisticated crowd of west brits!

Its not really until Irish people go abroad or go travelling that they become proud of their nationality, I suppose it takes meeting other people and different cultures to remind people of their heritage, guaranteed the people emigrated won't be embarrassed to be proud of being Irish. Yeah we're sh*t now but we'll get through it, we got through the famine and invasion so we'll be alright ;)

You can't be 'proud' to be Irish - it's out of your control, you simply are Irish and that's it. I'm not 'proud' I have a nose or that I've ten fingers, I was born that way. I'm only proud of things I've accomplished or actions I've taken. It's nice to be Irish, sure, but that's that imo

    Proud of what exactly?
We had 800 years of English rule and only a few ppl actually did anything about it while the rest of the populace just kept their heads down.
We had FF in government for the last 15 years or so and people did nothing about it..
We're basically now governed by Europe for the last 30 years and still people do nothing about it..
Our Politicians and Banks has screwed over 4.5 million ppl and will cause approx 20 year hardship for ppl.
So what's there to be proud of?

No but at the same time this handful of politicians found themselves voted into power with these very same people. They banked with these people also.

Respecting democracy is nothing to be ashamed of however the people get the governence that they deserve.

Can we get past this myth that the English ruled us for 800 years, it was the Anglo-Normans, they spoke French and they did what Normans do they assimilated into our culture and spoke our language over time and they only ruled a small part of the country. It wasn't until the differences in religion that the **** hit the fan in this country

I agree totally, but this is a period of poor governance and accountability, it doesn't represent who we are as a Nation...well at least from the onset of Irish MPs to Haughey...

well not quite. poynings law was passed before the reformation.

and although the normans became gaelicised over time they still owned most of the land and occupied the upper echelons of power.

but your right. irish history is far more complicate than 800 years, the famine, 1916, fields of athenry

Aye, the tenets of many forms of Protestantism are certainly far more compatible with the progressive views and lifestyles of the typical a la carte Irish Catholic than the Church’s doctrine.

“Protestant” still carries negative connotations in the minds of many Irish, though, so I don’t see a mass-conversion happening any time soon.

People know there's a recession. All you have to do is turn on RTE for five minutes and you'll see some miserable git telling us how the country is ruined. I don't see how spending every waking moment talking about debt and the IMF is something that would make you proud.

Are you not interested in anything besides politics and debt? Are you not still interested in television programmes and the small things in life? If not then I don't envy you.

I can see your point and agree with some of it, but this idea that an Irishman needs to fight in order to prove himself as both Irish and a man is ridiculous. And some of our culture being washed away is not nessecarily a bad thing. Take for example a complete unwillingness to question those in power that led to massive child abuse scandals and the current economic mess.

When is the average person going to realise we left the ''recession'' months ago??

A recession is three continuous quarters of negative growth.

Also people would want to stop moaning about welfare being cut a few euro.

I'd bet that no more then 1% of the population who moan about it are really in ''trouble''.
Whether they still drink one night a week, smoke or buy branded foods over budget brands(along with any unessential items they could get by without) the vast majority of people who whinge about ''the recession'' are wasting money.

Yet they expect the Government should pay their mortgage and feed them??, be grateful your not on the streets.... go to sunny America or over to England and see how long you last without a job, oh and in American's case try not to get hurt or sick in the mean time.

Be grateful we live in a country where most peoples needs are attended to working or not. Could be living in worse conditions in a 1st world country or PROPERLY struggling in a 3rd world one.

Before you come on here suggesting dole cuts. Why dont you try living on €186 per week. Then you can come back here and tell the world how easy it is to survive on this amount of money. Anyone can complain about something they know nothing about.

I am on welfare. But i don't waste money on needless things and go moaning about cuts that still leave us with an over generous welfare system. Go to the states and see how well your looked after... or maybe even just above the border.

If you are happy to have your income cut for something that isn;t your fault then fair enough. Don't expect everyone else to follow. I understand that we don't have it bad.

What the welfare system is like in the U.S is irrelevant to us.

I for one am very proud of this Country. We are not even 100 years old as an independent state.
We have a good education system , we have a reasonable health system, Our road infrastructure has improved greatly over the past 20 years, as has our transport systems generally. Yes they could all be improved but you have to live in the real world where it can always be better.
I remember the days when austerity was chipping the ice of the inside of your window to look out to see what the weather was like. Take a walk through any housing estate and look at the number of cars at each house and then tell me the this Country is finished.
We have 14% unemployment, 3% never worked so we are at 11%. That’s 89% working.
I agree the Banks are a total disgrace, the Government has not connected to the people and we have a lot of people who have nothing. But it seems all we want to do is blame someone. It’s time to do what the Irish do, get the sleeves up and get stuck in. Not matter what job you have if everyone makes a little more effort you will make that organisation more productive and that is the only road out of the trouble we are in.
