How to boost poor 3g dongle speed (vodafone)

    Hi,

I live in Dalkey (south county Dublin) I have a Vodafone 3g usb dongle and the connection was poor - I did some research and came across a youtube video (not sure if its still there) which showed how you could boost (focus) your signal by placing it in a cooking pot - I thought it was a joke but I was desparate so I tried it and.... the connection immediately jumped from poor to excellent.

Please check out the attached pic.

Some things to note - I used a D-Link usb extension cable and connected the usb to that so that it could connect to my laptop. If the dongle slipped to the side of the pot the connection immediately went to poor.

Finally... because of the problem with trollers (morons) on boards.ie I will not be answering questions or returning to this post however I do hope my experience can assist those in similar difficulties

More for others sake then, the cooking pot acts as a reflector for the signal which is how it boosts it. This also makes the signal directional, so if you try it make sure you check where your mast is first. (comreg has a website called siteviewer for this). It also won't work for all cooking pots, due to constructive or destructive waves, and won't give you as good a boost as a custom antenna will. Another benefit is because its directional you can choose between two cell sites if one preforms better than the other and you receive an equal signal from both.

Chances are you will get a better and more stable signal by positioning your modem somewhere you can get a clear signal. Or if your 3G card can take an external antenna, buying one that is actually designed for the 3g wave length.
