Chinese Cinema - still not cool?

Hey guys, what's the view of Chinese Cinema in here? I'm not talking Hong Kong but more mainland China. I've been to a few Japanese film festivals in Dublin, unfortunately missed the Korean one in IFI (Korean Cinema is amazing) but it's still tough to find a public showing of Chinese film in Ireland (Well Dublin at least).

Thanks to the interwebs I've seen a few good ones lately including Still life (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0859765/) and A world without thieves but as far as I know none have been shown here. Guess Chinese cinema hasn't got that gateway genre of anime that put Japanese Cinema in the limelight, nor the legacy of directors like Akira Kurosawa for that matter.

I would have thought with so many Chinese people in Dublin there would be more on offer.

Anyone any good Chinese film suggestions or know if there's any Chinese themed clubs/festivals?

I didn't think China had much of a film industry outside of Hong Kong with all the censorship and that? I'm not sure how the hand-over affected hong kong either.

Pretty sure every chinese movie I've seen came out of the Hong Kong industry.

Yeah HK eclipses mainland stuff in most cases, the industry churns out crime and romance flicks by the bucketload. Case in point: Infernal affairs - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338564/ - great movie.

I think censorship gets in the way to a certain degree - less so than in the past though. Plus censorship doesn't matter if your genre is romance or war epics. Red cliff (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425637/) is a good example of a mainland Chinese flick that I would have liked to see get a general release in Ireland.

    Any HK stuff you'd recommended?

    Infernal Affairs is great.

I always assumed Red Cliff was HK since it was John Woo, must get round to watching it.
Here's what I can think of, pretty well known here I think in general, Once Upon a Time in China trilogy, Early Jackie Chan movies, Hard Boiled, The Killer, In the Mood for Love, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern, Farewell My Concubine, City on Fire......... can't for the life of me think of anymore :)
