Looking into getting my next tattoo in Japan next year and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of artists/ studios. A cherry blossom is on my list of tattoos to get and thought it would be fitting to get it done in Japan. :)

Would be willing to travel to a good artist. So far the plan is Tokyo and maybe Osaka or Kyoto... but nothing set in stone right now.

Thanks. :) I'd actually been checking him out... nice work!

Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated. :)

I would second Shige, obviously book in advance and he tends to only do large pieces.

Shige is super, although I heard his waiting list is 2 years at the moment. Worth a shot though, if you're booking for a year's time and the piece is suitable. His apprentice Tomo is also very accomplished.

Gakkin and Gotch at Harizanmai in Kyoto also do really nice work. English is not a problem at their studio. http://www.harizanmai.jp/

In Tokyo there are a plethora of reputable places to choose from.... Scratch Addiction, Hocus Pocus... For Japanese style work Horizaru http://www.horizaru.com/ and Horiyasu http://www.horiyasu.com/index-e.html look super.

For Shige, Horiyasu and (I suspect) others a translator or some facility with Japanese seems desirable, although people do wrangle through.

Going to be over there in October and my girlfriend is considering a piece too, OP.

Just got Shige's 2009 book as a christmas present - reinforces how awesome he is... Really amazing work.

Cheers for all the recommendations lads. :) I'm having so much trouble deciding!

Got a recommendation from the tattooist that did my Tiger for Chopstick tattoo in Osaka... more and more temptations. ;)
