Always very hard to predict a winner of that competition at this stage at least with the CL its an easy choice between Barcelona or Barcelona.

Is this an open draw? Can teams from the same country play each other?

Sky sports news is a total load of crap they ignore all sporting events and sports that they are not covering and give huge coverage to poxy stuff they are covering like darts. The standard of reporting is juvenile.

    And??

You still cant slag a trophy off one year because ye werent in it and all of sudden ye are in and now its a good trophy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭carlop

Ugh almost the toughest draw possible for Napoli. Aris beat Atleti in Madrid fwiw so they can't be too bad, though I'm sure City will qualify easily enough.

This is a great draw for City in terms of the last 32 but I don't fancy playin the winner of Besiktas/Kiev.

The problem with lack of interest is that the competition is now an over bloated mess. It should go back to being a tournament with knockout rounds to separate the wheat from the chaff. I'm sick of this current format with uncompetitive groups and more and more teams being shoved into it.

I agree, and look at the CL group stages total rubbish...that competition doesnt really start until after xmas...champions league! sure half the teams in it have not won a domestic championship in decades.

Damn, I have Porto backed at 22-1 and still think they are the team to beat but what a tough draw they got. Next up is Seville and then the winner looks like playing another one of the favs in CSKA Moscow in the last 16. Toughest draw they could have got. The 2 English teams got handy draws in both the last 32 and the last 16 considering what they could have got.

One team from the Europe League Rd.2 qualifiers Besiktas and three teams from the Champions League rd 2 qualifiers Sparta Prague, Lech Poznan, and BATE Borisov.

Nice of you to tar every Liverpool fan with the same brush

Out of curiosity who do you support? Are you saying you wouldn't care if they won the Europa League? Because anyone who says that is talking bull IMO.

The UEFA cup is Liverpool's biggest goal this season as 4th spot is as good as gone imo.

It also may be our best chance to get back into Europe next year.

A bit of realism is needed from some so called fans. If you don't want to support them in the Uefa Cup, sure why not go thw whole hog and boycott FA cup matches too next month.

Nothing worse than a shíte fan imo.

Bursaspor and Trabzonspor are the top two in turkey by a distance this year, we saw how poor both were against man utd and liverpool in europe this year, Besiktas while traditionally strong at home are awful away from home, truly terrible

the only thing i would worry about in kiev is the cold, that match will be in march so the snow will be gone

any liverpool or indeed any so called fan from any team that would say such a thing isn't a fan in my eyes, liverpool are still the only british team to win that trophy in the last 25 years, if it was good enough for bill shankly to win it should be good enough for any fan of any team, liverpool fans and indeed rangers or city fans right now would give their right arm and leg for some of this

The Europa League Group stages are a farce but the competition itself is a serious competition. There are good teams left in it and is far superior than any domestic cup competition like the FA Cup or the Copa del Rey in terms of quality. It is the second biggest Cup competiton in Europe behind the CL and is a quality tournament. The likes of the Carling Cup should be scrapped as one domestic cup competition is more than enough.

Actually, kind of related to this, does anyone think the winners of the UEFA cup should qualify for the Champions League? It would give teams an added incentive to take it seriously.

Nope, I see that as being no better than allowing CL flops join the EL at the knock-out stage.

What teams are not taking the EL seriously?

Teams dont take the Carling Cup or the FA Cup seriously but teams in the EL do. Practically all the teams will play their best 11 in the last 32 unlike every other cup competition in Europe bar the CL.

Well it would only be one team joining next year's competition, as opposed to 8 teams joining a competition half way through a season.

Just off the top of my head I remember Villa fielding a fairly weak team in the knockout stages a couple of years ago, but in general I get the impression teams don't prioritise it.
