I've never seen a snow flake in real life, I actually thought it was a myth that they are shaped like this.

    Thanks!

    Thanks!

    Cheers.

I was stunned too. Now, these are 100% crops, but it's brilliant.

We had a few flakes (couldn't call it snow really) that fell and stuck to the window. That's where I noticed them.

On the camera, I used LiveView, with 10x magnification, manual focus, mirror lockup and 2sec timer to capture those (camera mounted on tripod).

Nice! I've never seen any like this in real life. I would have thought you'd need to be fairly fast to get a shot of them before they melted on the glass.

    Well done!

I saw this the other day for anyone interested, snowflakes under a microscope - http://www.laboiteverte.fr/de-la-neige-au-microscope/

Same as the others in never actually having seen one properly.

At the last game I took some shots of snow on the posts, but not nearly the same detail.

    Get outta here!
Thats amazing, I never thought anyone with anything other than the most high tech of equipment could get a shot of actual flakes like that!

    Great pics,Paul.:)

I thought about having a go myself with my 105mm f2.8 macro but decided it was too cold to go outside!:p:D

I did it from the comfort of inside. The flakes were on the outside of the glass, hence the need for manual focus.

Tricky but fun. I hope the chance arises again in the morning.

I looked at these last week and though ... not bad, nice but ...

Then, on the bus home from Dublin yesterday, when it was pelting icey-snow, i was watching the flakes roll down the window, and close as I could stare into them I could not see detail like you've captured. Your shots sprung to mind. Now I see why they're so special :) Great job Paul.

    I really want a 1:1 macro lens!

Very good and definetly worth the effert you put in to it. Almost looks like a picture from the deep ocean.
