Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    hi
we have free to air triax box. lost bbc for last few months and i can't tune anything in. i've got a list of frequencies, but i'm getting nowhere. has anyone got one of these boxes and be nice enough to explain how to get these channels back. am loath to call out the guy who installed it, as it will be 50 quid i could do with.
i'd be very grateful for any help, blondie

In fairness the guy has to travel to him so hes really charging for his time and expenses. Its easy enough to DIY so obviosly the better option.

There's 2 places down my way that charge to retune fta boxes-you have to bring the boxes to them so no expense incurred except by the 'customer'.Why not simply leave the manual behind after the install? But then money couldn't be made by charging for retunes when channels change transponder. At least on boards the advice is free and as they say "if you teach a man to fish etc. etc."

Yes, but if you teach a man to fish how will the poor fisherman make his money ?

Yes I agree he should have been given the information and the opportunity to do it him/her self.

thank you jobyrne. that vid looks exactly the answer. i haven't tried yet (snow issues here) but will when i get a spare minute. thanks so much.

in fairness to the guy who installed it, he did leave a user manual for the box, but it doesn't mention how to tune in. i was trying in the wrong place, in the tp list..... he's also very good, comes out straight away etc. i don't really begrudge him the 50 quid. i just haven't got it to spend on it now.

will let you know how i get on if i ever get a sec to try to tune in.

    thanks again, blondie

The Installer should have explained that this triax box needs to be retuned every few months and he should have recommended a branded Freesatbox http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5a/Logo_freesat.png instead of a cheap free to air box. The OP would have probably paid an Extra €50-€60 for a Freesat install. The Freesat receiver will automatically update and retune its self every time a channel changes TP or frequency. Most of the installers I know along with myself only supply and install Freesat systems.

    annpanman,

    scallers dead right.

If and when you can afford it pick yourself up a Freesat box.

It'll handle all the tuning and updates automatically without you or your local TV guy going near it,

The user interface will also be far nicer and easier to navigate with a complete 7 day programme guide instead of your Triax, which only gives you what's on now and next.

At this stage, Freesat HD is worth it. BBC1 HD picture will be 20% to 30% better quality even down-scalled to SD RGB on SCART than the BBC1 SD MPEG2 feed.

Agreed Watty. But the majority of the public don't know and are not been told {by these so called installers who are charging €160- €190 for cheap kits} the difference between a cheap Free to Air satellite system that needs retuning and a Freesat SD, Freesat HD and Freesat Hd pvr that will never need to be retuned. If people were told that they could get a maintenance free better {Freesat SD} system for an extra €60 they would jump at it instead of paying the installer a call out fee to retune a free to air box every time a channel changes frequency.

Is the model listed in the downloads section here?

If you factor decent dish (60cm in East and 80cm West, 90cm far North west / South west for decent rain margin), quad LNB, coax and install, then the generic box is a false economy.

So one wonders what cost cutting on Dish mount, wall bolts, Dish quality, coax quality and time to do cable ingress to house properly is done?
