I'm looking for some advice/assistance with a USB/Ethernet adaptor and a linux based media player called WDTV by Western Digital.

I have installed a homebrew firmware called WDLXTV-0.5.8.1 on the mediaplayer.
The latest version of the homebrew is over one year old, it contains drivers for the chipset of the USB/Ethernet adaptor but they are incompatible with recently manufactured chipsets.
The USB/ethernet adaptor's linux drivers are less than 6 months old.

In order to connect the media player to my home network.
I need to cross-compile a driver to be read via USB by the media player.

I must stress I have no clue when it comes to linux and will require either a step by step tutorial or some very generous linux user to do this for me, I am not the only person who would benefit from this as you can see from threads on a homebrew forum for WDTV devices

    So far I have :
The GPL sources from Western Digital's support site.

Installed ubunto via VMware player on Win7 pc (and host folders shared on vmware player)

The asix.c and asix.h files from the linux driver cd that came with usb/ethernet adapter

I would really appreciate some help on this, I've had no luck on the homebrew forum, the guy who wrote the homebrew has moved on to newer versions of the wdtv.
