Well maybe any one with cop on would have read the little place where it said MATCH .You seem to be picking words not facts.I think he made reference to speed an bc .;)

You would be surprised how many people wouldnt think about using target ammo when hunting or how many people have no cop on;)

No need to think when you can just read up and see that paulo made reference to bc and down range energy, nothing about speed:rolleyes:

Maybe you need to look at the facts :P

Yes I did put this round forward as a target round. But on reading hornady's webiste they state that both the a-max and BTHP match expanded very quickly which would make them ideal for small game and vermin.
That maid me re think the round as a long range vermin round with excellent down range punch.
It is easy enough to get the standard match ammo. And now I am looking forward to trying the superformance when I get some in. Either in 53gr or preferably 75gr
    I can't wait.

Its a bit confusing that they mention AMAX and Boattail Hollow Point Match bullets which makes it sound like there are two different loads available which i dont think is the case.

Checking the bullets section for the 75gr gives an AMAX only

    http://www.hornady.com/store/22-Cal-.224-75-gr-A-MAX/

    It says
Match bullets are not recommended for hunting medium & large game
Even though it doesnt say anything about using them on small game i personally would be very wary of using them on the likes of a fox

What ever about the 75gr the 53gr is the one to look forward to

Thanks for starting the thread poalo65, I will be applieing for a foxing rifle in the next year or so and thought I had it all narrowed down to the .223 but this has certainly got me studying again

Reading through it all may just swing me to the .204

    Hi,
I found the 75gr A-Max bullet used in a 1:9 twist .223 rem to be very reliable, accurate over distance and very effective on foxes. Puts them down every time out to 200 yards (won't take a shot on them past 200 yards, just a personal thing)
Bullet expansion is very impressive (about 18mm) so if you are thinking of using the pelt for anything afterwards forget it :D
Leaves a big exit hole, the biggest I've seen so far was an exit through the shoulder after a head shot which left a four inch diameter hole after totally destroying the shoulder joint.
    Cheers,
    Slug

    Glad to hear that.
At least you are choosing after doing some research and seeing the pros and cons of each round.
Most of all happy and safe hunting

    Still undecided

I am just after reading Chuck Hawks views on the 204 in which he says the powder used for the factory loads is not commercially avaiable so the handloads would not be as fast, and as I know a reloader ( who already has .223 dies ) maybe this swings it to the .223 again ?????

In the "north" of Ireland. Yea

I have a friend in N IRELAND who reloads for the 204 and has no problem
matching the velocity of the factory stuff so I wouldnt worry about that.
Check out www.rugerhunting.com there is a lot of good info on the 204 there.

Yes you are right Zeissman, I have done some research on the english reloading websites and it seems there is no problem with it.
So Chuck Hawks is not right all the time - But sure who is

Anyway Ill not be putting down any deposits this week.

I only joined today but i have followed this thread for a few days . I find it very interesting to compare the .223 and the .204 . I think its great that two members that do not know each are willing to meet up and to compare calibers . I do think we should pat them on the backs and see what the out come is .

Just waiting for substitution Poulo ;) Will let you know when I'm sorted for the "face off" :P

Have only seen one Tikka in 204 here and that was gone as fast as it came into the dealers :(

Tikka in 204 would be the dogs gonads :eek:

sean in stakelums told me before that the importers who ever they are dont bring in any tikkas in .204, he didnt know why as a good few people had looked for them

  • Registered Users Posts: 877 ✭✭✭zeissman

Im a big sako fan and ordered a 85 varmit 204.
Accuracy was ok. around half inch at 100 yards but the rounds didnt feed or eject as well as my other sakos so I returned it to my dealer again.
I had a ruger m77 target 204 before that and it would shoot quarter inch groups all day with hornady 40 grain vmax.
2 friends also bought the rugers and they shoot the same.
