Just thought I'd share in case similar happens to someone else.
Modem arrived today and I connected everything together and waited for modem to initialise, took about 15 mins.

Once the wireless modem (cisco epc2425) was OK I did a test on speedtest and pingtest.
    I'm on UPC 15MB.

Compared to my eircom router :D
    eircom 3MB

Let's hope the UPC picks up a bit...

    EDIT:
did another test on http://speedtest.magnet.ie/ and some ping tests from the command prompt.
All looks good there so could be an issue with speedtest.net and pingtest.net

Turn off the flood protection in the router settings, should drastically improve packet loss.
I'm on 15mb here in Dublin and usually get around 12mb down and 1.3 up when connected wirelessly.Get almost the full 15 when connected with the ethernet

    Yeah that's odd.
Speedtest.net reports about 3mb and speedtest.magnet.ie reports 13mb or so.
Pingtest.net reports massive packet loss but my own ping tests show 0% loss.
    ping -n 100 speedtest.magnet.ie

I had the same problem when i got UPC on Saturday. Turning off the IP Flood Protection sorted it for me also. I noticed since that this question pops up quiet a lot on Boards. Could this information or information to get better speeds for all different providers be made a sticky to save the same questions being asked a lot?

speedtest use servers by other companies.
each server is different and offers different results. Results are dependent on the server you connect to.

I usually choose a london server.

Use upcs or magnets own speedtest as these give reliable results

if you want to check ur ping just use cmd ping www.google.ie

Turning off ip flood protection will show a better result, but on the whole there's no positive to having it off.
It's only triggering because speedtest.net send you hundreds of pings to get your speed.

I'm def not getting 15MB speed on youtube and similar. It certainly doesn't feel much faster than my 3MB connection.
Speedtest is pretty accurate on my eircom router so why not on the UPC router?

A few more test sites, supposedly good ones.

    http://www.upc.ie/broadband/speedtest/
    Eircom 2.6MB
    UPC 14.6MB

    http://performance.toast.net/
Eircom loaded 4,390,787 bytes in 41.506 seconds from ISCG server.
UPC loaded 4,390,787 bytes in 33.927 seconds from ISCG server.

    http://speedtest.magnet.ie/
    Eircom 2.6MB
    UPC 14.5MB

    http://www.testmyspeed.com/
    Eircom 1.8MB
    UPC 4.7MB

Oddly how only UPCs own test and magnet report anything over 5MB and they both report almost 15MB
whereas everyone else report sub 5MB, which is how fast the connection feels...

I assume there could be bottlenecks when leaving Ireland for youtube and similar sites but paying big bucks and no discernible increase in speed seems a waste of money.

I get the feeling that if I ring them to complain they'll point me to their own speed test and say "hey, our machine says you're getting 15MB..."

Can others on UPC test the above sites and see what speeds are reported?

    I got 14.6Mb/s from http://www.testmyspeed.com
And 2.9Mb/s from that american site for testing american internet connections in america.

    I'm on 15Mb

Website load can cause problems like your experiencing, but at the end of the day you are getting 15MB thats all UPC are responsible for, they cant help slow connections to other sites

i told someone that last week because 99% of the time it's true, but it turned out he was actually getting a genuinely crappy connection and it did sort it out for him, so i felt like a bit of a numpty even tho he was just the 1% with genuine issues.

still no idea why turning it off actually fixed his issues tho. :o

Ok, Im going to update this as I just checked the tests again on a wired connection...

Gonna have to look into add a better wireless modem to UPC box Cisco EPC2425

Testing UPS wireless versus wired to modem
Wireless connection to modem from laptop
    http://www.irishisptest.com/runmyspeed.php
    3.5MB

    http://performance.toast.net
Loaded 4,390,787 bytes in 41.175 seconds from ISCG server.

    http://www.testmyspeed.com/
    3.9MB

    http://www.upc.ie/broadband/speedtest/
    14.8MB

Wired connection to modem from laptop
    http://www.irishisptest.com/runmyspeed.php
    10.1MB

    http://performance.toast.net
Loaded 4,390,787 bytes in 10.794 seconds from ISCG server.

    http://www.testmyspeed.com/
    14.4MB

    http://www.upc.ie/broadband/speedtest/
    14.5MB

    http://www.speedtest.net/
    6.3MB

Hopefully all this info will be helpful to someone else with similar issues.

you got almost 15mbps on one of those wireless tests, so it could just be wireless interference on the wireless channel you are using.

download inSSIDer and use it to check what wireless channels are already in use in your vicinity and then use that info to find a quiet channel to use yourself.

of course, wifi isn't the only thing causing 2.4ghz interference, but it's a good starting point to try and improve your wireless speeds.

I have UPC 15MB and got 16.88MB on the UPC speedtest :)

That is on average, the meter even went up to 18MB at one point!

Ordered a self install 15mb last week, arrived Monday but house wasn't enabled (even though UPC said it was!) so I had to get UPC out,I am now getting 15 to 17mb.
After chatting to the lads they said the SNR has a massive effect on the speeds and that they operate between specific thresholds or the install doesnt go ahead....you should get onto UPC and get them to send out an installer to sort it for you (f.o.c of course).

Thanks, I use Netstumbler and am alone on my channel.
Signal noise ration is 42-45, same for both UPC and eircom boxes.

Whoever he was connecting to was flooding him with packets is my guess.
It's there for protection, not to limit speed.

    Pro's gateway their upc modem's anyway. :p
