Rights lads, sorry if this is a really duh question but I want to check before I start doing anything.

Have a domain and server with Rapidswitch which comes with a minimal operating system installed. I need to upload a website [which is done and ready to go] to the server so need to install a webserver myself on the server first in order for it to work.

I'm thinking something like Apache but most of the information I've been reading through is about setting up our own computer as the server but will it work the same if I'm installing it on the rapidswitch server and what exactly do I need to install?

Have you asked Rapidswitch for help?

yep their reply was that they do not specialise in web site development/deployment and I need to upload the web server and website myself. I've no issue with doing that once I figure out how.

Are you sure that you need to install a web server??
If yes, which server do you have? What OS is it running? If Windows you can download the Win32 binary.

I checked with their tech support and they said I would need to install a web server. We've three of the following:

    IS-09463 (Dell PowerEdge Dedicated Server)
    - Intel Xeon Quad-Core X3363
    - 16GB Memory
    - 3ware Escalade RAID Controller
    - 2x 1TB 7200rpm Hard Disk
    - RAID 1
    - Debian 5.0
    - 10 TB Bandwidth

Apt get will sort you out nicely!

Nice spec by the way, must be a serious site?

Why have you not just gone with a normal hosting service? If you're asking this question, then it sounds like what you've bought isn't right for you at this time and will just cause you lots of hassle.

A £160 a month beast of a webserver and you don't know how to install Apache...
