I have two bulbs in the attic over the water tank what is a safe distance from the roof felt. The tank is in the apex of the roof so they are about six inches from the felt is this to close?

you should be fine with that distance wise
the higher wattage bulb you can fit the better
the only thing is that most light pendants(bulb holders)are designed for max 60watt bulbs
it should do as a temporary solution though
in the long term try installation of a frost watcher

They are 45 degree batten holders with 100w bulbs so the direct heat is not on the felt but you can fell heat on the felt but you think ill be ok at that distance .Thanks

if the batten holder has a metal insert where the lamp is fixed its good for up to 100 watts, if its bakolite then usually 40-60 watts.
